The M3 is fast through 2nd gear, then its all downhill from there.
he was ahead by about 3 car lengths.
Some of you are right, that it was the drivers fault.
But remember this was the first time he ever opened it up on the street, and at this temperature. The grip difference between a drag strip during the summer and a 32 Degree side street is a BIG difference. Took a few runs for him to get the throttle just right.
Burnout would've helped, but he wasn't about to do a burnout with 1200 dollar tires....Yes, that's what those suckers cost for a pair up here.
Remember, it was just for kicks, so win or loose, it was just between a few buddies just having some fun...

You made the right choice...... :yesnod:

If the driver heated the tires and modulated the clutch out of the hole the M3 would have been toast from the start. The driver didn't go for it from the start so he got eaten for the first 1/8th.
But you guys have got to admit (even the ones that don't want to) that the M3 held it's own pretty darn well against a MONSTER like the Z, even though it weighs roughly 300 lbs more, and has 70 less HP from it's little 3.2L inline-6.
For those that are interested, below is a video from a *bone* stock E46 M3 running a 12.77 @ 107MPH with a 1.81 60' time. The owner's best time is a 12.72...bone stock. Definitely not Z06 numbers, but pretty dang good nonetheless.

:iagree:
M3's has only about 260 plus lf-ft of Torque so is much easy to launch it in a slippery surface....
And is tougher to control if you swicht off the traction control...... :chevy
The M3 driver was better. You're only looking at part of the equation. The torque the motor puts out goes thru the tranny gear multiplication and the rear end gear multiplication. The M3 actually puts down more torque to the wheels in 1st gear than the Z06. And this is going thru skinnier tires.
But due to the shorter gearing and less hp, the Z06 will always pull up top. The M3 is more suited to compete with a regular C5.
I've recently owned an E46 and you're picking on little kids. THe Bimmer is a fast car but this is apples to oranges. Go find another ZO6 to pick on! Take a chance with your pride!

Your being rather assumptious.
There's no question between both of them which car's faster.
Being good friends, they can appreciate both cars. Hell, I've owned an M3 myself, less than a year ago.
Actually, it was the M3 driver who wanted to run that night.
Because of the cold weather, the M3 driver knew that traction would be a big factor in a race on the street, combined with the cold weather, knew that the conditions would be favorable.
Suggest you read my origional post carefully again. :)
Just a fun run between two buddies, late one night.
