Default ZO6 Traction

Simple question; do most ZO6 owners really have that much problem with traction in first and second gear.

It worries me that my 2002 ZO6 is maybe weak compared to others who claim they have trouble hooking up in first and second. I have no problem hooking up with trac control off

Once i'm rolling in first I can use full throttle on a good road surface, and traction in second is fine too when 60 degrees or above outside

I havn't dyno'd it or run it in the quarter, maybe it's time.

Not so much a problem as a finesse thing in getting the MOST traction possible. With any powerful car, it is easy to break traction, especially in 1st and 2nd with the gearing available on the Z. Getting maximum bite on the changing road and temperature conditions takes practice and experience when going full throttle.

I can SNAP the throttle open when I'm in first gear with the clutch fully released while the car is doing 20-30 mph and break traction! When I shift hard from 1st to 2nd I can break the tires loose. Thats on a bone stock Z. I can only imagine what 50 more HP would be like.

If I want the best launch I have to more or less take my time shifting and feather the gas! :D

Here in NY this past summer, if I was in 2nd gear @ like 30 or so & floored it, my tires stuck also. I had to really try to spin on the launch as well. The F1 SC's stick great in the warm weather.

I have driven 3 Z06's. Mine included. In all 3 I have been able to break loose the tires by being to aggressive on the throttle when in second gear (not shifting into it but while driving in 2nd).

I have a stock (no modifications) 02 Z06. I pretty much baby the car. One day I turned off the traction control because I was curious to see if it was slow down full throttle acceleration. So I puched it in first gear at about 20 to 25 mph. I was blown away. The tires broke loose imediately. I've tried it a couple of more times, say four, since. It is dependant on the temperature of the tires and road surface. When it's cold outside (below 60) it is pretty wild. When it's hot (above 85) traction is very much better. At colder temperatures (below 40) I really need to drive with caution as I have broken it loose in a gentle turn with traction control on by just giving it too much throtle in first gear. I had it sideways on an on ramp before I could react. The car just powered through the traction control and the automatic handling. My point is, neither system is fool proof. If you get too carried way, you can power right through both systems. It takes a while to learn how to handle the car, but it is really worth learning as it is a fantastic handling car. However, it is not idiot proof!

Great tires is right.

But try this, at an air temp below 60, with traction control on, accelerate to 100.

Now go to WOT in 4th to near red-line and make a strong shift to 5th.

At a speed a bit above 140, the rear tires will break loose on the shift and cause TC to light up in the DIC.

Most folks find it hard to believe that you can spin the tires at 140+ on a shift....but you can.

Fortunately, I have an abandoned airstrip nearby where I learned this.... :steering:

I would just find it hard to figure out a way to keep my seat clean... guess i would have to take an extra pair of shorts for that kind of thing.

DUG

Unless your a really good driver and have LIGHTENING fast reflexes, I seriously recommend only playing in competition mode! In compentition mode, active handling will keep you going down the highway in the right direction! That way if you goof up the rear end wont swap sides with the front end!

If your in a parking lot trying to sign your name on the black top Traction Control OFF is GREAT! :D

:iagree:

Mine does that. Going about 40 in 2nd gear and mash the pedal starts the spinning. This thing pulls hard....really hard.

Depending on the speed and other things I guess, if I punch mine in first gear above 3000RPMs or so it will usually come loose. If I start from 1500rpm or so in first gear and floor it then it might or might not come loose when the RPMs go up, depending on I don't know what temp, road condition, or whatever. But only if the taction control is off. If it's on, it never really spins at all, just a little sometimes before the TC kicks in.

Also, if you don't turn off traction control and you floor it, it might spin but the traction control is really soft in the cars and you cannot feel it working like in a C4, so it might feel slow because the TC is keeping it from spinning.

I drive with the traction control on when Im cruising around town and turn it off when a potential race victim emerges ,but there are times I forget that i've left it off and you know when you turn with traction control on and you apply just enough gas to slightly slide the rear over a couple feet , well lets just say its been interesting a few times. Solid 1st to 2nd shift tc on car goes into convulsions , 2nd to 3rd tc on with hard shift 2 or 3 burps and hold on. 1st to 2nd tc off hard shift and she pitches to the side and your driving skills determine a positive or negitive outcome. 2nd to 3rd tc off she either bumps the butt down real hard or gives a little pitch to the side. There has been a few times i got suprisingly loose 2nd to 3rd. this is 01 z , vararam , tb , mass, nitrous off.

If I get on the car at all anywhere in first or second above 3000 grand it will spin right up before I hit 5000 Grand then the TC kicks in. Note: the stock tires spin a lot more the colder the roads are. I have to practice not to step on it but it’s so much damn fun.

There are a lot of variables, I'm sure your car is fine. :yesnod: What is the road temp? What type of surface? Are you popping the clutch? Speed shifting? A stock or slightly modded Z won't just spit you out unless you want it to.
