Re: Cleartastic (MackIII)
3M...I had my brother's shop order and instal mine. It's been road tested at about 1<cough>70mph or so. I held up to an agressive pebble. The area applied to seems to have a little more orange peel. Nothing a good coat of NXT hasn't solved . Just makes it less apparent.
Cleartastic is great because it is removable. I like the temporary protection while on road trips. The 3M product is great but you can see it and that's not okay for me. Installation of Cleartastic is fine if you follow the directions and Ed is fantastic if you ever have any questions. One of the best people on the forum for customer support!

:iagree: I like the cleartastic because it is removable and if a piece does get damaged due to a flying rock you can replace it. If you damage the 3M product; you are stuck with it for a long time.
Cleartastic is great if you want to protect the wheel well areas but if you're looking to protect the bumper/hood, go with the 3M film. After over a year, the paint on the front bumper is perfect and the film seems untouched. Even if the film does take a serious beating, you can have it removed and replaced.

I have had the cleartastic applied to my 04 Coupe for a few weeks. I purchased it for the trips that I know I'm going to be using the Vette for.
I was satisfied with the product.
I must express a note of caution if you purchase this stuff. If you think there may be any rain in the forecast, and you plan on driving your Vette, get the cleartastic off.
I had the cleartastic installed for several weeks and in dry-weather driving, it held up great (even at speeds of up to 100 mph -- that's as fast as I had it). Last weekend changed that.
I left for Bowling Green for the C5/C6 bash in beautiful weather, but hit some pretty bad rain storms. Well, driving in those storms, I lost all but 3 pieces. Kinda frustrating to lose $90 worth of cleartastic.
Like I said before, it works great as long as it's dry, but as soon as the rain starts to fall, forget it.
Please note, I'm not bashing the product, and certainly not the vendor. Ed is a standup vendor who was very courteous and helpful when I placed the order. I am merely stating this as a warning to anyone who either has, or is considering the cleartastic.
A couple comments which should shed some more light on the subject.
First off, I am pleased with the performance and appearance of Cleartastic. If you look at past comments I have made regarding Cleartastic, you'd see that I've had nothing but good things to say.
I have driven in rain before with the Cleartastic applied, and never had problems before. Some of the rain fairly strong.
It wasn't until this past weekend enroute to Bowling Green for the Bash that I encountered multiple severe thunderstorms while driving the car. These storms were some doosies, the strongest being quite honestly the worst I've ever driven in. At one point I couldn't see more than a car length in front of me. I've never had to pull off the road, but I found myself doing this more than once that day.
Not sure if it was due to the intensity of these storms, or perhaps flawed application that resulted in the loss of my pieces. I will be talking with Ed at Cleartastic today to try to further understand this.
I like the cleartastic and 3m products. I've never used cleartastic, but I'll never have a painted bumper car w/o one of these products. Paint is a magnet for rocks.
BTW, I don't mind seeing a tear in the 3m from a rock. It's not hard to live with b/c it's nice to know that it's not the paint that's chipped.
Just wanted to say hi and thanks for the kind words .
However the pleasure is all mine... I really take pleasure in knowing my product helps protect your beautiful C5's.
In the many years we have been in business, I have spoke with countless amounts of people. Some of which have become good friends.
I truly enjoy the conversations I have with each customer from trips they have encountered to picking up their very first Corvette. Each story is unique and I enjoy hearing about it.
You can t beat this job with a stick. :D

Glad you like the product.. Rain should not be an issue. We wind tested up to 160mph in dry and in wet (rain) conditions. Stayed rock solid. We also tested with sleet & snow.
Yes some actually take their babies out in the snow :D
Many customers (some even C/F members) even use our kits during the winter against the bad elements after a snow storm (small rocks, salt.etc)
There's a ton of posts (including this forum) where customers have driven thousands of miles in all weather conditions good and bad. All with no problem.
However you had a problem. The good thing is we care after the sale. Give me a call and we will take care ya.

I understand what you are saying about the 3M that you are OK with seeing teh damage in the 3M and that it is not on your paint.....however I have yet to see anyone take off 3M that left the clear coat on it . At least not to the point I would be happy with.
Some people will never take it off but if you do expect to re-clear that section of the car.
Also the cost of the 3M installed will run you about $600 or so in this area
