I am using the Altec molded and painted stone guards. The fit is quite good with a little sanding. You just have to take your time when you install them and make sure they fit perfectly before doing any drilling.
I don't have any paint chips behind the wheels.

Around the rear brake ducts; now that's a different story. That is the area we really need something for protection.
I know they are not that great looking, but I can't say I dislike them alot. I just picked up a set and will get them painted to match and put them on, I did the same with my 96, and when I removed them the paint was fine. I live in area with a ton of contruction and stuff always seems to be on the ground. They also helped alot when i autocrossed the 96.
When painted and put on propoerly they can be very subtle. I do agree I prefer the car without them but the chips really show up on dark colors, so I made a compromise.

Mid-America Designs. I think 602-268 is the p/n, and the price is $39.99 for four. Smoke Lexan is the same price, but the reflectivity may draw attention to them and is probably a drawback. Page 5-14 of the current C5 catalog has an illustration, and they're likely available elsewhere.

As I mentioned and contrary to the instructions, drilling is not required for the rear units. The single screw in the wheelwells hold them adequately. The fronts use existing screws.

Mine came prepainted to match the car from Altec.

I would have gone the pre painted route as well but they did not have Lemans Blue :cuss So I'll have em painted locally
