a good buddy just bought one of those. "street-ported", full exhaust, turbo timer/boost controller, etc. we lined them up at bradenton speedway and I went 4 for 4. it was UGLY. at the time I had blackwing and full exhaust.
he was talking about all the stuff he was gonnado to prep for the race
i told him id prolly just wash it and fill it up with gas
ive been giving him soooo much crap about driving rice burners
now im gonna have to go buy some headers or something to get some more umph so i can win
any suggestions?
Don't fill the car up, put 1/8th tank in at most. And you're gonna need a lot more than headers. Headers, intake, exhaust will get you around 390hp (330-340rwhp) and that's not near enough. Just get a 100 shot.
A guy at work had a RX7 modded by Peter Farrell super cars here in VA. I think it was putting out around 380hp. The acceleration was brutal, absolutely breathtaking. I don't think you will be able to beat him without a HUGE investment.
When I lived In Atlanta 10yrs ago, I bought a new 93 RX-7 and eventually shipped my car to Peter Farrell to have the engine rebuilt and modded. Those cars are turbocharged wankel engined go-carts... very nimble and quick. I wasn't afraid of vettes after the mods and had more fun picking on the Vipers (still futile though).
The biggest problem with those cars was reliability. It was getting so many factory recalls and stuff breaking all the time - when it was stock. Also, keep in mind that during those years Mazda never figured out how to reliably keep those engines running cool enough.
In fact, if you are set on racing your friend, pick the HOTTEST day to do it and race him repeatedly.... he loses a lot of power in the heat and I guarantee that if his engine temperature even comes close to the red zone, he will have no time to shut down and save it. Even Farrell (who used to race RX-7s on the Mazda factory team used to tell me that the rotaries were at a severe disadvantage on hot days) Good luck.
But who cares? He's still driving an RX7 and I'd still be in my Vette.
Despite how incredibly 'rare' it is that any car on the road can take me if I ever do chance to see tailights I still walk away the winner knowing that I'm in a vette and they're in a <insert car>.
can you resize your pic, it takes up my whole screen and i use a 22" monitor at 1856x1392

It really depends on how much actual power he is making. Most of the hp figures tossed around by speed shops are numbers pulled out of the air. 400hp quoted might be more like 300hp in fact. The thing is, with the weight and stock performance the RX already has, he doesn't need much more than 300hp to take a C5 convertible. The engines do grenade easily, which is a big reason why there are people doing V8 conversions, and the 2 modifed ones I have seen both had wheelhop problems, so even making the power isn't necessarily winning the race. Mind you there are lot's of C5 owners that run closer to a 14.0 than a 13.0. There are also RX7s in the 11s on their stock turbos so he might run high 13s and you could eak out a victory, or a 12 flat and he wipes his *** with you. They are not a car to be taken lightly. Have a look. http://www.dragtimes.com/search2.php?carmake=29&name=Go
I have only seen one RX-7. When he pulled up next to me at a light, he said, "Sounds good...what ya running?" When I told him, he smiled...light turned green & he slowly went on his way.
JohnnyB,,,you made the point..huge investment. Once you cross that line you open up pandora's box. As soon as you go get someone to build it for it you, you left the realm of stock. Speed = $$, how fast do you wanna go and how fast do you wanna go in a Japanese car. Im sure there are Vettes in this forum that can blow the paint off that piece of crap...But if you take a stock Z06 and put it up against your stock ricer, the Z06 gets the flag....
The RX-7 will win, but obviously you aren't racing apples to apples. Add enough power to a buick and you could take a Z06 easily so basically the pressure should be on the driver of the RX-7. Now if both cars were stock; the Vette will spank an RX-7. My suggestion is to bump up your power to around 425 ponies and that should make the race much easier for the kill.
From: Florida Gators! 3 National Championships back to back!!!
You also have to remember that the C4 was the competition for the 3rd gen Rx-7, not the C5.
There are a lot of single turbo rx-7s with 500hp out there that run low 10s so be careful.
A 400hp rx-7 will spank a stock C5 as long as the driver can hook up and doesn't spin the tires.
The drive train of the rx-7 can take a lot of power through it. Peter Ferrel built several 3 rotor rx-7 putting out 600 hp running through a stock tranny.
Saw one of them at summit point running against a modded Viper GTs and the RX-7 just walked away from the Viper.
Yes they can be fast.
The best part of the Rx-7 is that they are not on every street corner like C5s. I can't go a mile here in DC without seeing 3 C5s.
Wow, The Corvette owners all are very mature. Most forums would just bash any other "inferior" car. I love Rx-7s. They were able to muster up a .98g -.99g on the skidpad back in 1992 with crappy 225s stock. They can put over 1 lateral g with some better tires. This is why they are the only 10+ year old car classed in SS along with Z06s vipers porsche turbos lotus etc. I believe they even outperformed the C5s in SS but the Z06 dominated it later on. They had a 0-60 time of low 5s (average) and 1/4 of 13.9 (average) best magazine time I saw was a 13.5@102..I forget which one though. vettes have the advantage from a dig cuz of torque. Anyways run him and post a vid! I love both cars. Here are some Vids of Vettes vs RX7s
"The biggest problem with those cars was reliability."
Absolutely correct.
This is an interesting thread, because I've always loved the 1993-1995 rx-7, but I was never willing to buy one because they had HORRIBLE reliability records. It was tough to find one with more than 85k that hadn't already had the motor and tranny built.
But the concept of the rx7 and the looks and weight are legendary. I love the sequential turbo concept. And, let's face it, the vette we drive gets some of its cues in the looks dept from the rx7, esp. on the sides.
REALLY cool cars, awesome looking - but no way would I ever buy one unless I had money to burn.
Also, I obviously LOVE my corvette, but after owning turbo cars I have to admit, the rush of that boost is really cool.
OMG!!! I just watched the vid of the guys going 160!!! Holy **** thaose guys are NUTS and would kill ANYONE they got in a wreck with - they should have their ASSES kicked for that ****!

The RX7 TT is a car to be careful with. I race against several of them in SS and they can tool.
