Default Cracked Baer Rotors

While changing my brake pads to go racing last weekend at Willow Springs, I noticed several cracks in my Baer Eradispeed rotors. They are about and inch or so long, go through the drilled holes and are full thickness. I noticed about 2 to 3 cracks per rotor.

I have had them for about four months and have fivetrack days on them. I broke them in just as the instructions stated and have had no other problems since(i.e. warping).

My question is, Is this normal or maybe a defect? I was hoping to get some professional opinions and/or experience from some forum members before calling Baer.

Thanks,
Thorpe

[QUOTE=Too Tall Z06] Baer Eradispeed rotors.
[QUOTE]

I hate to tell you this but those rotors are for looks and the street only. The first reason rotors had holes was for lighting, then for the out gassing of the pad material, neither reason is needed today. I'm friends with one the head engineers at Porsche, not only do their cast in holes crack, but he admits that they only have holes now for marketing reasons; and if it were up to him he would have slotted rotors only. Notice the heavy and fast Cayenne has solid rotors.

Use DRM brake ducts, high temp fluid, stock rotors, and racing pads for the track and you'll be good to go. Save your baers for the street.

My Eradispeeds started spider cracking around the holes after one Driver Education event. Back to oem rotors for me.

Unforutinitly rotors with holes in are for looks only. The therory behind the cooling prosses is sound but only when the holes are cast into the rotor like Porsche does. However, even Porsche has changed their tune.
Porsche, not only do their cast in holes crack, but he admits that they only have holes now for marketing reasons;
Can we say BLING BLING??

This is why so many ppl who track their cars use the Raybestos rotors Rockauto.com $19 ea plus shipping or NAPA rotors $25 each.(Same rotor) Better then OEM - these rotors may be inexpesive but they are not cheap.

Napa rotor part numbers

RF - UBP 86700
LF - UBP 86701
LR - UBP 86702
RR - UBP 86703

I do 13-17 Track weekends a year and I use the stock PBR Corvette brakes with the NAPA rotors, PFC-01 pads, Castrol SRF brake fluid, stainless steel lines and DRM cooling ducts. I take off the street pads and put on the PFC-01 pads and check and bleed fluid before each event. This also allows me to inspect my brakes quite often. Safty first.

Rotors and pads last 3 to 4 events.

Unfortunantly, cracking around the drilled holes in rotors is rather common, especially when stressed at track temps. I happen to think they do "look" good, but its one of those ironic things where swapping to drilled and slotted rotors to get that high performance racing look actually lowers performance. Go figure....

From Baer's website:

"Although crossdrilling and/or slotting will provide a welcome path to expend any gasses when and if they develop, it is primarily a visual enhancement behind today’s often wide-open wheel designs."

and

"Baer’s rotors are cast with crossdrilling in mind, from the material specified, to curved vanes, behind which the holes are placed to minimize potential crack migration. Slotted surfaces are what Baer recommends for track only use."

Thanks for all of your replies. I'm just glad that I saw them before any catastrophes occured. Changing rotors definetely adds to the prep time before track days, but it looks like the best option.

Thanks again,

See you at the track!

I only use stock rotors for the track, never the crossed/slotted rotors!

I just started ordering Raybestos rotors, love 'em and the price is even better than stock

Here is a thread on front brake cooling. Lots of good info and pics of the DRM ducts and the home made Mobil 1 cooling ducts

not a z but on my c4 after one hard stop after a top speed run last weekend... i noticed cracks today as well when washing here... both fronts had cracks. I did hit 312 km/hr and mashed the brakes as hard as i could just to test the brakes out.. I called my Baer and they said they will replace them both.

Funny you mention that, when I pointed out the very same things about drilled rotors a year ago I got a lot of Continuous and Returning Crap or was that on the other Corvette Forum... =;-]

Maybe it's just you, and really had nothing to do with what you wrote

Thorpe,

I put StopFORCE rotors on the front of my Z06, and left the EradiSpeed Plus 1 rotors for the rear.
