Way to go Bob!
I also plan on installing the kit myself.
I thought the "kit" included the harness and the plate?
Give us some info on where you bought it, how much it cost, what's involved in the installation and how long it took you.
Thanks
Sounds like the way to go. I'd rather pay a little and do it myself than take it to the dealer and have them bugger something else up while "fixing" my car. So Bob, how much for the parts??

Can't quote an exact price since I also picked up a few other parts along with the kit. But I would guess the list price is going to be somewhere around $100.00.
Now that may seem to be a lot but consider this, today I am ordering a $375.00 BCM because of the POS CLB.
If you DIYS then make sure you have a service manual and follow the instructions to the T for removal of the steering wheel.
And you will also need a new snap ring for the plate and a new torque prevailing nut for the steering wheel.
I needed to purchase a new wheel puller but they are readly avalible at places like Murrays auto parts or Autozone or the likes, about $12.00.
Actual working time is less then 2 hours but you will need a couple of torx sockets and bits to remove the steering wheel.
It's really not that hard just that you need to take the precautions like disconnecting the batt cable and pull the #25 fuse in the pass footwell and then wait 10 min. before proceding with removing the airbag.
And your right about the dealer screwing something else up every time they touch your car.
Just no problems you have found YET!!!!!
Not all problems throw codes.
OK, Bob, we get it. You hate the CLB and blame it for all your problems. Just let the guys who have one and like it alone. We all have an opinion, and you've expressed yours ad naseum. Enough already. If you want to advise on installing your own GM parts, fine. Otherwise, STFU
i have a 98 A4 with CLB. I have never had it lock up since the CLB install, but I still have problems with the "10 second" message and the car dying when I put it in gear. I would estimate that every 1 in 10
engine starts will result in the 10 second problem. I have the recall notice and intend to do it. I don't have any special programming in the computer so I'm not worried about that aspect of it.

Whoa! Hold on there!
That's no way to speak to another member of the forum. Some people get a little over zealous on their threads sometimes but they don't deserve that kind of treatment.
Members like you are what gives this forum a bad name on the other forums.
Is that the way you talk to your packages?

Good info. Thanks. Read the TSB and GM mentioned the need for a special tool for removing the lock plate and replacing it with the new "cam orientation plate," whatever that is. Quote "failure to use these tools may result in damage to the cam orientation plate, retaining ring or steering column components." Since you've done it, is this a valid concern when making the change? Did you have to rig up a tool to complete this step of the process? Thanks for any additional input.

The "cam orientation plate" is the replacement for the lock plate and is smaller in dia. then the lock plate.
You will need a lock plate depresser to remove the snap ring that retaines it. Then to install the new plate I just pushed it down with the old plate with the depresser.
This lock plate depresser came in the steering wheel puller kit I bought from Murrays, it's a universel kit so it comes with both english and metric adaptors for the steering shaft.
i never had a problem with my column locking up at all. after reading all this stuff on how it will probably lock up sooner or later made me order on. I installed it, and it works perfectly, NO codes, NOTHING. Works perfectly! oh yea, ive got a 97.
Sure, the GM fix is desirable. However, when GM has a recall campaign open for only a certain time, some people with potential problems are left out. When my column in my used 99 FRC took a dump, I went to two different dealers. Both said that the recall work had already be done and the campaign had been closed. When I asked what they could do, they both said that I'd have to foot the bill. Needless to say, I ordered the CLB and haven't had an issue yet with MY POS.
.................A recall campaign on a specific car is only closed when the repair has been made. This is my understanding.
