which is the recommended model and where is the best price?
any opinions pro or con please,
Detectors are a matter of opinion, but I have had my Valentine 1 for over a year now and think it's GREAT! The "arrows" showing the incoming direction of the beam (left, right, front, back) are very cool and they DO work. Sensitivity and early warning is outstanding. They are'nt cheap, but well worth the money IMO. Hope this helps!
IMO Mike Valentine (who by the way engineered Escort for Cincinatti Microwave) left Escort to develop BETTER ,NOT cheaper detectors. Check out www.Valentine1.com. That should answer your questions.

You got that right, 3 cars 3 V1's You can save some money but you'll end up using it for the ticket
Other than the directional gimmick of the V1, a side by side comparision shows the 8500 X50 ahead. Especially with their new blue LED's that match the C5's dash lighting.
All I have to say is that the V1 has saved me from thousands of $ in fines and I am sure some jail time!!!!!! Have had it for 4 years and it hasen't let me down yet.
Just about any name brand radar detector does the same thing with regards to saving drivers money from tickets.
Directional indicators are just a gimmick in my opinon because you will do the same thing no matter where the radar is coming from, namely slow down. But if that is something you want then get it. You can't go wrong with any name brand.
I have really been interested in the 8500 X50 myself, as you can tell. Then again I have only had one ticket in my 30 years of driving without a radar detector. So it might just be a waste of money for me.
I owned 3 Passport detectors before I got my Vette. That's when I switched to a V-1. The directional arrows are no gimmick. Knowing when LEO is ahead or sneaking up from behind is a good thing. Also, the V-1 can always be upgraded.
The only reason to not get a V-1 is a budget restriction. Call up and ask to buy a unit that was returned under their 30 day policy and you can save something like $50, making the V-1 just $50 more than the Passport.
I have the 8500 X50 blue and love it. I got it on line from www.litewarehouse.com which also has piaa lights and other brands.
Their customer service is awesome.

They work great till they overheat when left in the window(per Passport cus ser) v1 is still the best.
I switched from the escort to a V1 a few years ago. More range and less false alarms. (But the newer escorts may be much improved). I do like the arrows. They help especially in areas of know false alarms.
I've heard the new 8500 X50 is upgradeable. Does anyone know if that's true?
I have both and it's really a toss up as far as performance so far.
But the arrows work great! No gimmick IMHO. I use them all of the time. If the V1 beeps momentarily and the arrow is behind me, I know exactly where to look and usually speed right back up. If it beeps momentarily and is pointing to the front, I know to be careful for a while.... Just one way the arrows are useful. With the X50 I find myself waiting until I confirm the location of the radar.
Both sit in the sun all day long and I never have overheating problems with either.
I bought the V1 years ago and when they had a new model out I sent mine in to get aw brand new one from them. I don't see any other radar company allowing you to do that so yes it is more money up front, but in the long run it is cheaper (if you want to stay up with technology).
Also I don't feel the arrows or the bogey hits are a gimmick. Driving a regular road I know that my radar goes off with a 1`bogey hit. A few weeks back it came in with 2 and sitting right there was a cop trying to mask himself.
All in All though I think it is just opinion because all the good radar detectors work when you have a rabbit in front of you and they all suck when you are lonely rider in the fast lane...
