I am thinking about getting a intake for my 99 C5 and already have quad stingers on the back. I have been thinking about the Haltech and want to make sure I get the best bang for the buch.
Can anyone plesae give me their opinion on which INTAKE is the best out their?
Also, I have heard a lot about the intakes from different threads but noone seems to state the difference in SOUND their intake makes... Can anyone tell me about the sound difference they noticed after installing their intake. (Haltech, Blackwing, Vararam) I am looking for the sucking/whistling noise when a rev is placed against the engine.

I have the VaraRam VR-B2... Which is the best will probably be debated for another 5 years. As for the sound, I was expecting some sucking sound from the ram air (I have had a ram air kit in the past on a Mustang where it was prodiminant) however I really didnt notice much difference in sound. I did notice a difference in my trap speeds @ the track now though. Trap at 110-111 every pass despite my novice driving and basically just an air bridge, vararam, and slp loudmouths. I was very pleased with the results on my intake.
I have the Halltech Stinger and I think for bag for buck it's the best. The Vararam B gets a lot of good reviews and adds a lot of HP but it's 200$ more and a lot harder to install (well i guess depeding on your skill level) My intake does not make any noise....although it's hard to tell with the SLP exhaust being nice and loud
It also depends on what you are looking for HP wise
Been around cars with different intakes...I have a Halltech Stinger, they seem to sound the same to me, slightly louder "sucking" noise than stock. Seems most the noise comes from headers, exhaust. At idle, not much different unless you had some engine mods added.
My Halltech sounds better than the previous RM Racing set-up
The best "bang for the buck" is certainly the Halltech Stinger IMHO, as it comes with a better flowing air bridge and coupler.
I have a Blackwing, along with an after market air bridge and coupler, and am completely satisfied with the SOTP (no dyno yet) improvement over stock.
The Vararam is probably the best for gains in HP and performance, especially if you race, as it's best gains are at speed. But it is a bit more involved to install.
As for sound, I can definitely hear some "sucking" (much less now that I've replace the stock exhaust with Z06 Ti's) when accelerating hard. Not a big deal, though.
Good luck. You will be pleased with whatever you choose over stock
Thanks for the reply, what have you heard about the Haltech Stinger? Sound, HP increase, etc....
Also you could do a search here on the forum. Dave68 has done a very innovative/effective cold-air mod for the Stinger since it's not a cold air intake... I am sure Dave68 will chime in here..he's got great insight on this stuff.
I have the quad stingers on now. I am looking for the best sound quality setup and have always loved the muscle car sound on my cars.
I really am looking for a sucking sound, and HP increase is a must but within a reasonable budget since I am up for tires now to :-).
Halteck Stinger, not a cold air intake?
* What would be the differences with going with a cold air intake and not? Also, what cold air intake products are available at what prices?
* Just want to make sure I get something I am pleased with.
Cold air prevents a loss of power when intake temps exceed 100 degrees or so. At 135 degrees, your power is down by 8-10 and THAT is very noticable. For less than $30, you can provide cold air to either the Halltech Stinger-R or Blackwing. As I mentioned in another post, you can download this mod procedure in PDF format from Halltech's website.
IMO, most aftermarket intakes are leaps and bounds ahead of the OEM box, especially the non-Z06 box, which has an opening the size of a hotwheels car. The Blackwing (a very good filter) used to be the best bang for the buck intake, but for the last four months or so, the Halltech Stinger-R, which includes the airbridge and smooth TB coupler along with the largest filter made for a C5, has my vote for that title.
Well, I most certainly won't dispute that statement! The TRAP with tunnelport provides the most direct path of cold air to the throttlebody, bar none.
Pros: Big HP gains on the track and dyno
Cons: More expensive than the Stinger, Tunnelport detracts from front end appearance
Stinger-R:
Pros: Low cost and slightly less HP, but can be upgraded to stage II (my term) with my cold air mod. No alteration to the C5's front end.
Cons: Causes some Z06s to produce lean codes, which can be eliminated with tuning. One person with a 98 C5 has had trouble fitting the airbridge under his hood.
Yes, more power is available from a cooler thermostat AND tuning, which among other things can program your fans to come on sooner. I've seen 10+ RWHP as a result of tuning.
Well, the cost was a big factor and because I live in CA, I need to easily remove the system to install my Z06 box whenever the semi-annual smog check is due. I was considering slotting the fog light panels, but after reviewing many different variations of radiator cover-modded systems, I decided that this was the best option. Bang-for-buck, the Stinger-R wins every time.
