With the CLB installed is there any way the pin could drop into the lock plate?? It appears not, but I have never seen the mechanism. Sid.

What you need to do is call several different Chevy service managers and ask them exactly what the re-program is doing....not the lock or anything else.....just ask what the programming alone is doing....you will then have the answer you seek...and the one several people here and in other threads have given you already

The pin retracts by the motor. I do not believe it can drop loose on its on at all. What has been causing the problem so far is that it wont retract. I have not heard of anyone having it lock while driving....

Well nobody here said where they got this information, that's why I asked. Everyone is stating this and stating that but not giving sources of the information.

As I mentioned in another thread a coulpe of weeks ago, I installed the CLB, and then the pin started to slip out of the retracted mode...while I was driving. Therefore, I removed the CLB and the car is still OK.

I just got my recall notice yesterday, and I'm really torn as to what course of action to take. The car is three years old, although only 8K miles, but I've had zero problems with it, and I hate to take it back to the dealer!

How were able to tell this was happening ? While you were driving ?

As I would turn the steering wheel, I would hear a clicking noise. I assume that the lock plate has several positions for the pin to engage, and it was hitting those spots as the steering column turned. Yes, this was happening as I drove the car. Needless to say, the CLB was removed the next day...

Good thread Stock Man...
...but what about us '04 A4 owners???Is there a problem with ours also? I haven't heard anyone mention this so far for '04 automatic transmission owners.....unless I missed it...I also called GM and gave customer service my VIN number and she looked it up and said there were no recalls for my vehicle but she also said that there were lots of recall notices sent out for the exact Vette as mine built several months before mine because some washers were left out somewhere......GO FIGURE....

OK...so after you removed your CLB did this "clicking noise" stop ? Are you getting the recall done now ?

The CLB is well worth the money. $50 is CHEAP for such a great idea.

Stop being cheap, GM will not FIX the issue. CLB causes no codes to be thrown.

You dont have a column lock in a 04 A4. It was eliminated.

Yes, the "clicking" stopped immediately after removing the CLB. As I mentiond previously, I'm very hesitant to let the dealer touch the car. So far, "knock on wood", I've had zero problems with the car, and don't want to open the door for any screw ups to happen....

leadfoot4, this is strange. You should have the exact same issue without the CLB.
Just like Stockman said above, the default Column Lock (CL) functioning is only powered for 1 second @ key On and 1 second @ key removal. All other times it is unpowered.
With the CLB installed, the Column Lock is not powered and therefore should not be able to move. I wonder if you CL pin was broken by someone to get the column unlocked? Or, maybe the CLB itself was the source of the rattle? Did you zip-tie up the CL wires when you disconnected them?

Sorry but if GM has known of this problem since like 97 - 98 they should have scrapped or revised all there existing steering locks and provided there next customers (1999-2004) with a trustworthy product. This all sounds to me like a MICKEY MOUSE fix so they could use up obsolete parts at the expense of there customers safety / bank accounts. Not what I would expect at all.

I'm the original owner of the car, and to the best of my knowledge, the ignition switch has never been tampered with. I secured the CLB to the underdash bracket using a piece of "hi-tech" aluminun tape.

When reinstaling the underdash cover, I did experience some difficulty getting it aligned around the ignition switch bezel. Maybe this caused some sort of internal binding in the lock mechanism. When I removed the CLB, I also loosened and slid back the console trim panel, which allowed me to slide the lower dash panel much easier.

I doubt that the CL pin has been damaged, as the car worked fine before I installed the CLB, and has been OK since it's removal. I don't know what to say, other than it didn't work for me....
