Why is no one just removing the lock plate as an alternative to the bypass? Is it more involved?
Even though there would be nothing for the column lock pin to engage into, the vehicle would cutout if the pin failed to retract when starting. This would happen because the position of the pin is monitored by the BCM
I had the column lock recall performed on my 98 A4 last week. The tech told me the harness kit he installed consisted of a relay to keep the computer from throwing codes as well as the lock plate. When I insert or remove the key I don't hear the motor in the column lock so I'm assuming the column lock ***'y is unplugged with the relay in it's place in addition to the lockplate. It sure is a relief to know that I can't have the steering column lockup on me.
I installed the CLB last year on my 97 A4. I then recieved the recall three or four months ago. Took it in they said they were going to remove the locking plate. When I got it back, CLB was in glove box and the locking motor runs again when I turn car off. Does this indicate fuel will be shut off if the locking motor malfunctions? Maybe I need CLB reinstalled??
I was going to take my 97 A4 in for lock plate removal on the recall notice I received. I do not have the CBL installed. I am concerned as I have 3:42 gear ratio and 2400 converter, so I am wondering if I will get Error codes at some point, requiring pcm programming.

Not to worry The "fix" on an automatic does not include reprogramming. ONLY the 6 speed gets a reprogram. Go ahead and get it done.
P.S. I had the fix done to my '98 A4 over a year ago. My car has a 3.42 rear gear and I have had no codes and the car runs and shifts great.

I would. If the Column lock malfunctions and stays in "locked" position, I believe the computer will still shut off the fuel. I would install the CLB. You already have it, so 15 minutes and you're fixed forever.
