I was trying to find out what gears are in my 99 coupe, 6spd. From reading some of these replies it looks like maybe 3.42??? Does the owners manuel have this info? Where does one find these things out. Or is that the only gears the 6 spd came with???

Maybe my DIC is wrong but my average always says 16.4 - 16. 9. Mostly city driving in an MN6 with Halltech Stinger and no other mods. Either most of you who posted here always drive mellow and slow on the highways, or my handle is only too true. But, it's only a name, I swear.

Just over 31 mpg in my A4 on the highway and about 21-22 around town. Waaaay better than my 5 liter 200 hp '91 Firebird. Amazing how much more power comes from a much more economical (gas wise) engine...

Default Real or Not

I also get indicated average real world Washington Beltway Traffice milage about 28 but when dividing miles by gallons I get 26. I don't think the display is all too accurate. BTW the BTU content of premium verses regular is identical and as such premium will not change gas milage when driving steady state speeds.

I have a 2000 'vert MN6 with 4.10 differential. Milage runs 20-22 around town and 27-28 highway at 75-85mph cruise speeds. Onboard computer calculates mileage about 10% higher fillup calculation.

I just got back from a ride and fill-up. Using my trip meter, which I always reset at fill-up, I calculated that I am indeed getting pretty darned close to what my DIC reads - 16 mpg city.

Now, I also made a special trip on the freeway at 10 miles over the posted 65 speed limit during the ride, and do in fact see that if I were to drive that way ALL the time, I would indeed get in the 20's to low 30s in mpg. But, come on, let's be serious, who in their right mind drives within 10 mph of the speed limit on freeways? People in Ford Focuses don't even do that.

So, I am shocked and somewhat insulted to discover that I'm the only one on this thread who appears to drive "normally", let alone "use" my C5 the way it was designed to be used. So please, don't make us all look like old fogies and drive your C5s once in a while, will ya?

You figured it out. All C5 6spds have 3.42 gears. Haven't looked to see if that info is in my owners manual, though. It is on the window sticker, or in the specs of the brochure or Chevy website. For more info on your 99, try this link:

22 mpg mixed city/highway in San Diego, with many hills -- anything but level driving drops your fuel ecconomy like a rock and I don't have a lead foot.

The truly impressive thing is that my c5's MPG is better than all of my other vehicles (Accord V6, Subaru WRX, Ford Club Wagon, Pontiac Gran Prix, Ford Bronco).

I've got a worked up cam, custom computer tune by the Vette Dr., custom ported LS1 stage III heads, averaged 70 MPH and got 28 mpg on the way back from Carliale this weekend, and average 20.3 mpg local driving.

I'm not sure what my problem is.

When I bought the car ('02 Z06) in Sept of '01 we drove it from NCM to northern California. Got 36mpg average most of the way during the breakin, going slow, no hard acceleration, etc. Then the rest of the way got about 32mph.

Now I have a 160 thermo, fan controller, Halltech TRIC and '01 MAF (with screen to help with the surging from the TRIC.)

Dropped to 21-22mpg on the highway doing 55-65mph (where I used to get 28+.

Put it on the dyno stock and was at 11.5:1 AFR, pretty rich. Put NGK plugs, GMPP wires, 160 thermo, fan controller and got 10.5:1 AFR... really rich. Then put the Halltech TRIC and '01 MAF on and off the dyno chart at 9.9:1 AFR... WAY rich...

Also had a local tuner try dyno tuning and couldn't get it to go into power enrichment mode... Figured out the '01 MAF must have a different calibration or something???

So now going back to stock, try tuning again, and then mod with 180 thermo, Haltech TRAP, LG headers, cam, Borla Stingers, etc.

Also, on a cold night with the 160 thermo my engine ran at 167*... WAY too cold for good MPG and emissions.

I did one 120 mile trip @ 65 on cruise ONE TIME........about 35MPG......most of the time I'm around 28 on highway.
Drove 875 miles to Fla. once....and I'm usually in 4th or 5th through the traffic.........and still got over 24.
I love it when you tell people your 175mph car gets 35mpg if you want it too !!!!!

I just completed a 6000 mile road trip with my 04 C5. I have 3.15 rearend and automatic. On my trip I averaged 28.5 on two lane, four lane and I ran it around 80 - 85 mph with cruise on and off. I was on straight highway and in the mountains. The gas mileage is better than I get with my Lexus GS...I can see that I was not only surprized at the mileage, but it was sooooooooo funnnnnnnn. I never got stuck in a line of motorhomes...winks...!!!

I have MN6 and 3.42 rear. At 80 MPH in 6th, DIC shows 31.5 MPG. At 100 MPH in 6th, DIC shows 24.5 MPG. Average on DIC is 24.5 MPG.

Now, we're talking. I wonder if my mileage is so low due to the crappy gas here in CA. I know someone said octane makes no difference, but I notice that most of you who are getting much better mileage are from somewhere else (a downhill run from Tahoe to San Jose doesn't count, no offense). Hmmmm... is it time to move? Lord knows we have way too much equity in our homes here...hmmm... better gas, less problems, lower expenses...hmmm... his and her vettes...hmmm....
