The mileage shown on the DIC is pure fantasy. It supposedly shows the average for the previous 20 gallons of fuel. I reset the everage mileage and the trip odometer every time I refuel. Invariably, the DIC will show my average at 29-30 MPG, but when I calculate it from the actual mileage shown on the trip odometer and the amount of fuel I purchased, the true mileage is 23.5-24 MPG. That is still amazingly good for a performance car, but about 20% lower than what the DIC shows.

And, yes, I run premium. You can run lower octanes, the PCM will reduce the ignition timing whenever it detects detonation, but then the power (and mileage) goes down. And, with the difference in prices running 4-6% difference between grades, you'll quickly eat up any savings in poorer mileage.

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

I get just the opposite result. Better mileage with 87 than with 91 in my 04 coupe.

BTW: more energy in the 87 than in the higher blends. The only minor difference in acceleration which I doubt we as humans could detect without electronic equipment.

Premium fuel is an emotional issue for the driver .... not the machine, unless it is moded or a Z.... Sort of like a MN6 v. A4

Highest I have seen is around 34 on the open road...isn't it great to be able to cruise at 80+ MPH and still get over 30 MPG

Wonder how many Viper owners can say that?

NONE

Around town I average 21/22 and that's in this &*^%$# Atlanta Traffic

Hmmmm... is it time to move? Lord knows we have way too much equity in our homes here...hmmm... better gas, less problems, lower expenses...hmmm... his and her vettes...hmmm....
Try getting 91 octane at a 76 station. They don't have MTBE and I've noticed a slight jump in my mpg. Talking to friends/car folks, we've thought that maybe since there is no MTBE taking up space in the gallon of fuel, then there is more fuel in there, thus giving you more actual fuel to burn, which would last longer?

Either way, I try to buy nothing but 76 to keep the MTBE out of my cars and out of the air/water.

As for the DIC, I find it very close to accurate. I reset the average mpg and my trip odometer everytime I fill up. I'm withen 1 mpg if not in the tenths of a gallon when I figure out miles divided by gallons on my cell phone...

I get between 28 and 33 mpg on road trips. 30 to 35 mpg on highway cruising at 75 to 80 mph. 6th gear drops the tach to around 1.5k rpm.

Local driving drops to anywhere between 22 and 25 mpg.

Sometimes, after filling up, I have to get up to speed (65-70 mph) and watch the "range" numbers go up. Gotten from 425 miles (per tank) to 615 miles. Normally, on highway driving, half tank measured on the analog guage shows a little better than 300 miles (range) to the remainder of the tank. I also noticed how it doesn't "drop" from 130 miles to "empty" during highway driving.

22 on the highway (when I keep it under 80) 12 around town, but some reason the car always wants to go fast.

Yup. Been doing it for years now. DIC is ALWAYS higher than actual mileage. Each and every time! The only difference is by how much. In my experience it varies from approx. 5% to 10%, and as I said, it's higher than actual. My actual mileage in town is 19 to 20. DIC mileage shows 21 to 22.5 range. The numbers vary a little from tank to tank but suffice to say an 8% error would be about average. HTH

My DIC tends to be about 10% on the optimistic side. There was a long thread on this topic a few months back. I have shown anywhere from 14mpg to 36mpg depending on my Cars "Mood".

My DIC reads about 10-15% high compared to fuel consumption measured by using the gas station pump method.

I average 5.4 mpg, so all of you guys should be plenty satisfied with your mileage. And given that I am paying something like $4.75 a gallon for 100 octane race fuel, 5.4 mpg really hurts.

I have a '99 MN6 with 44000 miles on it; I get about 32 mpg on the highway (67 - 68 mph), and around 21.0 mpg around town (horsing it a bit to hear the beautiful sounds onf my B&B Bullets).

Why anybody would spend 50K on a car and then try to save a few pennies on gas by not running premium makes no sense.

On a recent trip I got 25mpg average @70 to 80 mph. Also that was with a Head and Cam job. 93 octane.
