About three weeks or so I fired up my 01 and all the gauges went dead as with all accessories(stereo, windows, locks, etc.) and sevice engine soon, engine losing power, and all sorts of other messages started running across the display, all with a very loud beeping noise. I took it to my Chevy dealer and they had it for a day and said they had found a bad ground and it was working fine. The next day it did the same thing so they took it all back apart and found another "bad ground", but this time its been working fine for 3 weeks and two 400 mile round trips back home from college. This morning when I was already late for a test the damn thing started acting crazy just like before. I took it to a chevy dealer here and told them my story, they said theyd look at it. Just wondering if anyone has had any problems similar, or any words of encouragement to keep me from trading it off for an SUV or something stupid like that. I love my Z but its getting to be a hassle. Time is up on the warranty, so its coming out of my shallow pockets.
FWIW & IMHO:
Well, yes, my '02 Z06 with about 15.5K miles on it did just the same exact thing yesterday morning when I started it up to go to work. Went home last night and tried it again and it starts up fine and runs ok for about 20 secs. and then does the same routine. I do not have a loud beep, and I don't remember if the stereo was playing or not, but, gauges: Oil gage goes to 0, temp tacks all the way over, don't remember what the battery gage does if anything at all, all of the warning signals come on: Service engine soon, traction control comes on, check gauges display, & so forth. I have not taken mine to the dealers yet. Going in tomorrow or Monday. Good luck, and let me know what transpires. My alternator is literally cooking after running for only 15 or 20 seconds.
Haven't had any issue like that on my 01. My only electrical gremlin was caused by a faulty rear wheel speed sensor knocking ABS, traction control and active handling off line. I hope they find the problem and fix it once and for all for you this time. Electrical problems can be a real pain, as you can fix one circuit and another one goes. Ask Florida Power and Light (restoring electricity to South Florida after Hurricane Frances)!
As for getting rid of it...think of what you just said!! Do you honestly see yourself in anything other than a Corvette? Before I bought my 01 Z, I had a 93 C4 Coupe. I toyed with the idea of buying a *** import or another Mustang GT, but when I got my senses back, I knew (as did my wife) that the only possible replacements for my C4 was either another Corvette or an exotic. Well, I didn't have the money together for the Diablo so I went with another Corvette. Yes, repairs are a hassle. I went through major repairs right after I bought my C4 (over $3000 in repairs the first year). Go to the gym and hit the bags for a little while, get your frustration out. Then, when you get your Z back, slide into the drivers seat and enjoy again!
Just got a call back from the dealer, they think it is the ignition switch? It could be there by monday but it costs $350? Oh ya they said they werent sure if that would fix it? I dont know what I should do?
so much for picking up girls after the game tomorrow
Maybe you should grow up. Car trouble (esp. electrical gremlin trouble) isn't really that funny to the guy its happening to. So if you don't have a suggestion to help the guy...

anything will help
Thanks
Does the car have any mods like Euro taillights, third brake light, etc that involve an aftermarket wiring harness? Often when those go bad they cause the same kind of symtoms you describe. Good luck and hang in there....I know these can be really frustrating.
I seem to remember some folks having trouble with the stock batteries leaking and doing damage to the underlying wiring/computer, which in turn caused "spooky" symtons such as you describe.
The electronics on the Corvette are some of the most advanced in the world. They even implement a computer network for all the micro-controllers (uses a lot less wire, saves a lot of weight). The more sophisticated the electronics, the more spectacular the failures.
To me, it sounds like a power supply issue. Check the battery and any electronics close to it (could be damage from leaking battery).
Two dealers, two different opinions... I think we need a tie-breaker before spending a chunk of money... that or a guarantee that gets me my money back if they are wrong.
Did you ask where the "loose ground" was? Was it the same "loose ground" both times?
I have an '01 Z06 that I bought new. Other than the Column Lock issue, I have never had any problems with it. What you are experiencing is definitely not a common problem.
I have had that happen twice. Once at the dealer who was and still is perplexed. The first time after two days the car started and ran like nothing happened.
The second time, we shut off the passenger airbag deactivator and the car behaved normally and has not given me any problems. GM says they don't understand why but I suggest that something happens when I deactivate the airbag for my grandchildren. SInce the electronics are very sophisticated and complex certain settings may create unforeseen problems.
When I talked to the service guy yesterday he said that "to get the windows to roll up we will have to get the ignition switch and go from there"(oh ya the windows were stuck down) I went ahead and told them to order the switch (even though I dont see how the ignition switch would have anything to do with the windows) theyre gonna put it in on monday then I guess ill go buy a red top for good measure. I just hope the switch was the problem cause its my daily driver and I miss my ride.
oh ya i dont have aftermarket tailights or anything
Well, I wish you luck. My symptons are virtually identical, and I will take mine into a dealer Monday after work. Mine is still under warranty, so this will get interesting I am sure.
Knowing this won't be of comfort to you, I feel like my Vette is an utter POS. It has has ****ling problems from 3000 miles and it has never stopped having problems. Search around here and it is easy to find the repeat problems of Corvettes.
I have owned the notably unpopular here, European performance cars, have run them nearly what one would seem...to death, and have not had one of them in the shop for repair and that's the truth.
As far as performance, don't kid yourself, there is plenty out there that will outrun a Corvette. Money is not an object with me therefore, I don't relate to the large contingent of "best performance for the buck" types here. I buy what I want.
I guess I'm used to better. The unhappy (or happy?) ending will be the sale of another C5 for quality reasons. New toy is already on the way. Just the facts in my case.
FWIW & IMHO:
I bought my '02 Z06 new off of a showroom floor on 4th of july weekend in '02. It currently has about 13k miles. This is the first problem that I have had. I do not have as many bad feelings against the vette as I do against GM. I will never again sponsor/support GM by buying as new car from a dealer. The as much as $ 12.5K off of sticker price that has been currently going on has really dropped the bottom out of the vette market. It is great for people that are buying right now and in the last year and a half, but to do that they screwed a lot vette owners that have bought a vette in the last 1.5 to about 2 years ago. So the customer loyalty program has changed at Gm to be: "Oh, you bought a vette a few years ago, well I am sorry to hear your feelings about a few measly thousands, but i must go suck up to this new future buyer, who ixs getting ready to give us money now. My personel feelings about this are that GM is the only manufacturer that can't predetermine how many cars they need in the new year, so they cdrastically reduce prices to a giveaway, screwing the whole resale market. I would never support the basturds again, mainly because I can't trust the idiots to not do it again.
Ive been talking to the dealer everyday since last friday, the latest news is.... its not the ignition switch, they put it in and it still didnt work, now they think its the driver side control module.... i dunno, i just want it fixed, ill let ya know what ends up happening
Have them pull the battery out and look closely at the compartment it sits in. If this vette had a previouse battery problem and wasn't caught until it was to late, it has most likey leaked all over the compters and thier associated wires harness that are locted rite below the battery compt. You can also pull the passenger front tire and remove the access panel on the lower rear section of the wheel well and see for your self if you have had any acid or water damage to your computers. This is something anybody can do in our own garage. I hope this helps! Sorry to hear of your misfortune, don't loose hope, she will ride again to another great sunset.
