Got my nut at the Sears Hardware down the street for 70 cents. I have a whole box full of nut and bolts, would you think I could find a 9/16-18? Nothing like a trip to the store for one damn nut! Well worth the time though.
Funny you mention the box of nuts and bolts. I went to my trusty old Folgers can full of my junkyard castaways, and I couldn't believe my eyes when right on top was a self-cutting, short, 9/16-18 nut! Sure made things easier.
On that topic, I'm going cut the shifter even shorter and install a Momo **** that simply slides over the shift lever - no threading involved. It attaches with 3 set-screws and a rubber bushing. That way I can shorten this puppy to the max without worrying about a demon key or any threads.

Everyone:
Got the Tap and Die set from work. Removed shifter, threaded tap down shifter, cut 0.75 inches off shifter, removed tap to clean threads, re-installed shifter ****.
This is an AWESOME mod ! I would have done this mod the day i got the car if I knew it was this easy ! My arm sits flat on the center console while shifting now. Much smoother shifts.
HA! Found a nut in my leftover suspension pieces box from my '72 rebuild. The nut was used originally for the long bolt between the leaf spring and the trailing arm. Cool. 5 minutes later, short shifter!!!
After about three months of a love/hate relationship with my BPP shifter (love the short, precise throw/hate the stiffness and difficulty finding reverse, and second on quick downshifts), I decided to cut down my stock shifter to compare the two. Simple to do - bought a 9/16-18 die at Ace for $9.99, sawed off one inch of the stock shifter, threaded the rest down to where it flairs out, installed it and threaded on my BPP ****. The results. Somewhat shorter throws than stock, but not nearly as short as the BPP. Much easier to shift, however, and for my driving style, which is primarily track days rather than the drag strip, I think it will work better. However, if I were drag racing the car, I'd lean toward the BPP for its super short throws. Like many have said, it's all about personal preference. I think I'm going to sell the BPP, if anyone's interested. I'll put the money into another mod, like SS brake lines or urethane bushings.
This thread inspired me.
I just cut off 3/4" and threaded on the 1.75 dia. chrome **** off my '64.
(leftover after a 5 spd change)
total height reduced by 1.25"
no space between the boot and the **** now.
cheap and easy!

When it comes down to it, the two best free mods you can do to your C5 are lowering it, and cutting down the stock shifter.
Now, anybody got a third cheap/free mod? I'm hungry for more.
