I just joined the club for having my steering column lock.
Thank goodness it happened in my garage.
I recently purchased my 2000 vette and I called the dealership that the vehicle was purchased.
The service manager told me to have the car flat bedded to the dealership. He advised me that this is an old recall and it may not be covered.
I told him that I thought it was a new recall and that I never received any notification from Chevrolet.
I also told him that I recently purchased the vehicle.
He told me that if the prior owner did not get the car fixed from the first recall, it will not be covered.
Is there anyway I can get the column to unlock to drive it to the dealership?
Is the information that the dealership is giving sound correct?
Thanks
Nick
ok what the dealer said is bs a recall is a recall .Call the gm line in your manual and get it resolved. If he wants to charge you tell him to just release the lock and that he and gm are responsible if accident occurs, their was a second recall issues a few mos ago because the first didn't work right and it still doesn't fix it,
Mine is a 2000 also, and I just got the recall notice about 3 weeks ago, had the work done with no problems. I think the dealer is wrong and owes you the recall work plus the towing at no charge to you.
Thanks, that's exactly what I wanted to hear.
I will have the car flat bedded to them and if I have to fight to get the car fixed at no charge to me I will.
Unfortunately, if you have a M6, Gm's recall dosen't guarantee that you will never again have the columnm lock up. It only guarantees that the fuel flow will be shut off if you try and drive it with the column locked up. You can have the latest recall done and if the column locks up in the future, and the car is out of warrenty, you have to pay for the repairs.
Welcome to the club. Try jerking the wheel hard counterclockwise and then while pulling on it clockwise, turn the key from off to on. It will only unlock while cycling the power from off to on so don't bother pulling on it after the car is started.

try putting pressure on the wheel in the clockwise direction then put the key in and turn it to 'on' as you are still trying to turn the wheel. This worked for me and i didnt have to 'shake' or slam the steering wheel around.
I'll give it a try tonight when I get home.
I already called a tow company to pick it up tomorrow, but I would prefer driving it to the dealership.
Thanks for the advise, I hope it works.
Bought a Y2K about 4 months ago and got the recall notice about 3 weeks ago. Local dealer made the repair with no hassle. Advise your local dealer you will file appeal to regional GM/Chevy rep. if service not forthcoming. Good luck.

You did not mention if you had an A4 or an M6...Certain VIN#'s were recalled in 2001.If your vehicle is an A4 and fell under the 1st recall in 2001 and the previous owner neglected to get the recall performend, you may be out of luck because that recall expired in July of 2003 The present recall is ONLY for the A4's that GM left out of the 1st recall. Both recalls are the same procedure for the A4.
On the other hand,ALL M6's that fell under the 1st recall are being recalled again, including the M6's that did not fall under the 1st recall.
I was able to get my column lock loose by pulling the steering wheel to the right while turning the key. I cancelled the tow.
I just gave the Dealership my VIN and they advised me that they will get back to me and let me know if this will be covered.
I'll let you know what happens.
I have an A4.
If the previous owner had the vehicle repaired, he would have brought it to the Dealership that I'm awaiting a return call from.
The Dealership called me back and advised me that it will not be covered under warranty.
He told me that the prior owner had the recall fixed in 2001.
He told me that he's not sure if it's the same problem and even if it is, it will not be covered. He has to take the column apart to see what's wrong. I asked him what else could be wrong. I told the column is locking up and there was a recall for it. He told me it could be number of things.
Can someone let me know whom I can contact higher up the GM chain to discuss this issue?
Give GM (Chevrolet) a call at 800 222 1020. Explain your problem, report dealer. Find another Chevy dealer to do business with. A Chevrolet dealer who knows Corvettes, not some dumb take advantage of you service deptment. Like the other forum member said a recall is a recall. Good Luck, keep us posted. Save the Wave.>George
C-5 TECH,
I'm confused!
Reading the NHTSA bulletin it doesn't mention the harness.
Reading my recall notice it doesn't mention the harness.
Are we to assume GM installs the harness even though it's not listed?
I would think the harness is as important if not more then the plate.
Thanks

Would you believe that I have been trying all day to get in touch with someone from GM. 800 222-1020 to discuss this issue.
Are there any forum members that work there that can tell me a good time to call to get through.
