Default Column Lock Bypass Question

Since getting the GM recall notice, I've been reading about bypass kits that eliminate the column lock on my '04 MN6. I'm on my 3rd C5, and never had a column lock problem. The bypass kit from Corvettes of Houston comes with a 12v cig lighter adapter, so I assume it must be powered to bypass the column lock. Is it always powered up, or just during key-on? Can someone tell me how this puppy works, and why I need to be concerned about it?

Thanks.

Just installed mine \The cigarette lighter cord is just to unlock it then you put it away. The actual bypass device is a small module you plug in.

I had my column lock at a Mobil gas station and made my own kit to unlock the column for 5 bucks. It is very easy.

My column locked on me recently 1000 miles away from home (2001, 6spd coupe)......got towed to dealer, freebee as first time user of 1800 chev usa...problem had nothing to do with the recall....I was out of warranty but out of town Dealer sez 'Lets pretend you had an extended warranty and I'll only charge you $50'....I said, Deal.. ..seems he had to replace the column lock motor and a few other parts...

The actuator in my 01 went south, too, but remember that a new one will probably last only as long as the first one, so I recommend that you get the bypass. I installed mine yesterday.
