Hi guys,
I am the proud owner of a new Commemorative Edition Z06, a vast upgrade from my old '91 automatic coupe. Four days old and I love it!
I have a quick question regarding the 1-4 Skip shift...it seems like I can force my way into second when it wants to go to fourth. Is this my imagination or the way it works?

You can force it into 2nd, but you will eventually damage the selector mechanism. Don't do it. You can, however, pause for a second 'til the light goes out, then shift to 2nd or 3rd. Either purchase the CAGS eliminator (cheap) or just drive it in a way that it never rears its ugly head.
Personally, I've had 'Vettes with this 'feature' since '96, and I no longer ever see it. If in slow traffic, I don't upshift 'til 20 MPH, while if the traffic is light, I use enough throttle to avoid it anyway.
off the subject but i purchased a 2001 z new and never saw the skip shift light until a couple of weeks ago. I assumed that mine had been disconnected. It took me over a year to discover if you hold down the traction control button for about 10 seconds it puts you in compitition mode . You really have to shift early to activate my skip shift or bearly be touching the throttle.
if you tach up to 2K,you shouldn't see that light at all.i've had my Z16/Z06 about a month now,and it is really quite a driving experience.this car begs to be DRIVEN!!!it's not just the horsepower tweak above a normal C5,this "bad boy" is a street-legal race car!
All very well but there's this thing called traffic that sometimes prevents all out aceleration.
I keep hearing this but still don't see the problem. We are not talking about driving fast, when I said higher rpms. Instead of shifting at the point you usually would shift....don't and keep increasing engine speed or not. Only talking about going from around 2000 rpm to 2500 rpm. Not exactly race revs and shouldn't bother traffic conditions at all.
In heavy traffic and/or low speed limits, I shift below 2000 RPM, before the light comes on. With higher speed limits and light traffic, I shift near 3000 RPM's, after the light goes out. And, at WOT, I shift... well, at a lot higher rpm, after the light goes out.
If your driving habits are different, you could get caught by CAGS. I think it would be very frustrating. If it happend occasionally, I could put up with it. However, if it happened more than rarely... there is a CAGS bypass gadget that I would resort to.
for me what was more of a statement thing than actually bothersome. I bought the baddest street legal mass produced car built in the Western Hemisphere, and nobody, not GM, not the EPA, is going to tell me when or how I shift. This is America, by God

Don't force it, you'll do damage to it. This may be the most discussed topic on 6-speed Corvettes on all of the Corvette forums today. You always read those that say you should raise your rpm's and the other proponents tell you to kill the CAGS. It's your choice, of course, but for me it was simple; I eliminated the CAGS for $19.99 and now I can drive MY car the way I want to. Too many times in certain types of traffic situations it just was NOT feasible to rev high enough to avoid the skip shift. Once installed, you can determine if it is for you. If not, it is easily uninstalled.
For all of those saying "live with it", have you been on a hill at a red traffic light or driving in a multi-level parking garage? You're just asking to have someone drive right up your exhaust. CAGS or bust- Best non-OEM piece made for this car!

Yes I have and still don't have a problem with the CAGS. I still am not getting the problem. With first gear you can go quite fast before you even have to shift. You may want to shift but you don't have to. I guess I'm just one of the few that CAGS doesn't bother. Extending rpms before shifting doesn't hurt the engine. In fact if you watch the tach most people will find they shift way to early anyway.
Yes, you can drive in such a way to avoid the CAGS but that is not the point. I don't want the car telling me when to shift and in what gear! Get the CAGS eliminator and regain control of your car. I like mine so much better with the CAGS eliminator.
