You may need to use a lighter abrasive polish first to remove some of the deeper scratches left by the rubbing compound. 3M One Step Cleaner Wax might work for this, part no. 39006.
Then use 3M Swirl Mark Remover part no. 39009 with a micro fiber towel and lots of TLC. Unless permanent damage has been done, you should get the old shine back again.
When polishing with the micro fiber towel be sure not to let the sewn edges touch the paint because they will scratch.
