I can only speak for the Halltech Stinger R. I've got it, am happy with it, and am very glad I got it.

Check out using a K & N universal filter, depending on year of car. I will be trying out a 5040 oval tapered filter on my 97 very soon. 3.5 inch MAF diameter. I think the 2000 model year is 4" in diameter, and you could get the RF-1040 filter. I think thay look just like the blackwing (if my memory is correct).

Halltech Stinger with cool air mod here. Dave68 has detailed instructions for the cool air mod on the Halltech site. I think the CAI mod is half the equation for a good intake.

I had the Black Wing on my '97 and it worked fine and I could feel the difference from stock, specially with the B & B exhaust. I now have on my FRC a Breathless Performance Products Ram Air connected to a Vortec Supercharger and it performs much better but it has 2 drawbacks: it is also more difficult to install (requires cutting) and the intake sits very low in the front and will suck standing water deeper than 4 inches if the car has been lowered... which means that a rod will go bye-bye out the side of the block

The Blackwing used to be the best bargain around, but was recently displaced by the Halltech Stinger-R, which comes with a huge air filter, larger than stock tunnel bridge, and smooth throttlebody coupler, all for the same price or less than the Blackwing (comes with filter only).

Both filters are very good, but bang-for-buck, there is nothing close to the Stinger-R.

As StevieB mentioned, adding a fairly simple cold air modification helps sustain that additional 12+ RWHP low speeds by supplying fresh outside air to the filter.

If it is not installed correctly. Mine just leaves a small impression on the hoodliner and nothing more.

I have a Blackwing and I paid $229 for it. I haven't seen the Halltech anywhere for under $399....

Can you send me a link to where I can get a Halltech for $229 (ish)??

Thanks

Ah!! My mistake!!

This is for the Halltech Stinger-R - NOT the Halltech TRAP!!!

OK, same as the Blackwing in that case. Thanks for the clarification!!!

The TRAP I have not seen for under $399...

Thanks again.

The Halltech Trap and Vararam use fairly similiar set up and both are "cold air" intakes....the Halltech Stinger flows about the same amount, but it is not a cold air intake , or as they call it, it's not a bottom breather. All I can tell you is that there is know way alone an intake will get you 30-40HP without other mods on it.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I have the Vararam and love it. Don't know what the problem with the air bridge is about, I haven't had any problems.
