Using the directions below, is the tap a standard torque?
1.) Remove the 1-6 gear label on the top of the shift ****.
2.) Remove the silver locking pin. Pull or pry it straight out.
3.) Unscrew the **** totally off.
4.) Use a big garbage bag and poke a hole in the bottom and slide the shift lever throuh it. This will help A LOT of clean up later !
5.) Use a 9/16x18 tap and thread it on to the shifter all the way down. Leave the tap "ON" while cutting in the next step.
6.) Measure 0.75 inches and cut it off with a hacksaw slowly. Its your choice as to how far to cut. I found the shifter boot would get too bunched up if I cut any more off.
7.) Remove the 9/16x18 tap to clean the threads.
8.) Remove and discard the garbage bag and metal filings.
9.) Re-install the shifter ****.
10.) Re-install the silver locking pin. You may have to cut it a bit in length to fit properly.
11.) Re-install the 1-6 gear label on the top of the shift ****.
12.) Quick vacuum of any metal shavings that got missed by the garbage bag.
First of all, it's not a tap, it's a thread die. A thread tap is what is used to cut threads in a hole, not to form threads on a shaft. A thread die is used to form threads on a shaft or rod.
Second, I don't understand what your reference to torque is relating to tapping threads. When you thread the die onto the shifter initially, it will go on just like a nut does. Screw it all the way down the shaft, cut the shaft and then unscrew the die off the shaft. As you get near the top of the shaft, the threads you damaged when you cut the shaft will be restored with the die. It won't be that difficult to reform those threads since there will be just a couple that you're actually fixing. Be sure to use cutting fluid or at least a bit of machine oil to lube the threads before reforming them with the thread die. And turn it slowly when you use it on the damaged threads.
Btw, 9/16"-18 is not a common or standard thread so you will probably need to order the die from a source like McMaster-Carr or some place similar unless you luck out and your local hardware store just happens to carry one that size. I bought a tap set from them with this thread when I was experimenting with custom *****. Individual taps and dies can be a bit pricey when you buy them individually so shop around or see if you can borrow one.
Seems like a lot of work, considering most of the after market shift kits do the same job as well or better. But if you are really into DIY, go for it! Sounds like you have it covered.
I'm heading to a friends that works on cars quite a bit. He has a tap and die set, with the 9/16X18. He asked if it needed to be regular torque. I was thinking of just shaving 3/4" or so off the stock handle and seeing how I liked it. Call me crazy, but this sounds easier than taking the entire center console apart and trying to fit all the plastic pieces back together. I don't have a problem witht he factory shifter, I just hate that it about touches the roof of the car - okay, so I exagerated a bit...

So were flags at half mast in NE this week after the crushing the Huskers' took last Saturday?
nah, the Husker fans are getting used to losing. I am sure the emergency rooms were busy after the game though.
First time in a long time that I looked forward to coming to work on a Monday. Everyone I work with is a NU fan Growing up I was a Hawkeye fan and I hated teh Huskers. I disliked them so much that I have always been a Sooners fan too I am trying to get tickets to the NU @ OU game in early Nov. I would love to see the huskers get their azz handed to them in person... of course, I could probably see that by getting Baylor tickets for this weekend

You're brave (or stupid ) talking like that in Husker land. although I have to admit, it is nice watching them get beat up on for a change.

a few years back I was at the ISU @ NU game in Lincoln and I thought I was going to be thrown from the balcony. I go to any home game that I can get free tickets for... and I root for the visitor
I have had people ask me... are you from *insert visiting school name here*? quite a few times.
I did have someone take a swing at me when I said that Scott Frost played safety in the NFL
The poor man's way of doing this would be to use a nut instead of a die. When I cut screws, I often spin a nut on it first. The nut, although not as efficient as a die, will clean up slightly irregular threads most of the time.

We've got the Huskers in Ames this year, maybe we'll win one more this year...
