I used to have 2.73s, and it was very much like what you are describing (very little tire spin). I switched to 3.42s and a 2800 torque converter and can barely control the car anymore (unless I burn em up first), and I pray before the car shifts out of first so I don't do a 360 on the chirp. However, my baby used to seem it could run way above 170, I ran it at 168 with 2.73s and it was going strong. Now around 150 I already feel the effects - but it sure does get there in a flash. . Tough decision based on your preference.
QUOTE: I have a 3 month old 2004 coupe with the A4 and 2.73 gears. This may sound odd, but it will only squeal the tires a little off the line and no chirp with the 1-2 shift at wide open throttle.
HOWEVER, at half throttle, it will spin the tires off the line as well as chirp the tires on the 1-2 upshift. Go figure that one!
And by the way, it is not so much horsepower that spins the tires off the line as it is torque. Also, at the rear wheels, your stock vette is probably only putting around 285-290 ponies to the pavement. That 350 figure is figured at the crankshaft.
My car does the same thing. Something that hasn't been touched on yet is the Torque Management (TM).
A4's TM kicks in under certain conditions to prevent damage to the drivetrain. Depending on what your doing and how severe it is different measures are taken to reduce torque to the back wheels. I notice it kicking in when the driveshaft feels like a rubberband winding up.
50% throttle may not be one of the parameters for TM intervention but 100% sure is. The value for TM can be changed with any of the editing programmers.
16.5K on my A4 with 2.73 and I can spin the rears with no issues. I put it in first, hit the gas about 2/5 of the way down and hold on. But if I do full throttle from a stand still in drive I barely get 1 full revolution. Has to be something in the computer.
My 99 coupe was an automatic. It had the 3.15 rear and would smoke the tires whenever I wanted.
Jeff
Mines a 99 coupe with the 3.15 rear, and I can burn 'em anytime, as I've said in other threads discussing this. I tend to think the 99's were/are just a little stronger than the rest. It was a better year I think! Just my humble opinion.
My 03 and 04 both had /have 3;15 rear end. I don't understand how you guys say they will burn rubber without using the brake. The likelihood that I would have two c5's that are dogs is unlikely. Maybe the prvious owners of your cars had the PCM massaged? Anyway, I am getting it tuned next week and will see waht happens. I have the Blackwing and the car runs great. Just can't billow smoke unless I give some brake first.
Then I started to think, The techs designed this car for performance. This means hooking up and going as fast as possible. Tire spin looses time in races. A lot of man hours and technology went in to making these cars "glue" to the road. A good smokey burnout is so cool though.
I totally I agree. I raced, and beat a friend who had a 98 Camaro SS, I had a 4 Door Grand Prix GTP. He smoked his tires for 2 or 3 seconds, I didn't, I just chirped and took off. I beat him to 85mph, of course he eventually caught me. The Vette has great weight distribution, which also makes it stick good.
Hey, you guys are exactly right! I took it out at lunch and at 1/4 and 1/2 throttle it burns rubber! So, apparently the friggin engineers even applied restrictive programming to full throttle even if you have it in competitive mode. That sucks. I'll make sure it gets deleted next week on the dyno.

Are you sure you are turning the traction control off?
Yup! Traction control off and in "competitive mode". The vette takes off like a scalded rabbit at half throttle, while a full throttle launch, causes it to "bog" for the first 30' or so, until the RPM's get up a bit.....then it puts you back in the seat with some authority.
You guys mention getting this "torque management" feature tuned out. Is this something that can be done with say, for example, a Predator hand held, or is this a job for someone with LS1 edit?
Here's my 2 cents I've got a 01' A4 with 3.15 gears when I first got it could not get the tires to do much with TC off, and than did the air filter ty wrap mod with K-N filter now I can smokem with the manual guys, just need to let it breath.
