Default I've been Violated!!!

Heading though town this afternoon, the light ahead changed to yellow so I slowed down and had almost come to a stop when the world exploded - the cable guy behind me (in his full sized Dodge Pickup) bounced me into the center of the intersection - what a rush! He hadn't seen the light change, or me stopping, so he was going around 30 when he nailed me.

After getting out of the middle of the intersection we both pulled off to the side and got out to look at the damage, and from outward appearances I won - the pickup looked much worse than my baby did (although I know the damage to my baby hurt me more than the damage to the cable company's pickup did him). A 2 - 3 foot section across his frontend was depressed back to his radiator, while from 30 feet away you can hardly tell I was hit (unless you're one of us). The initial body shop estimate was around $1200 for my baby. Although I did notice on the way home that my seat was moving forward about an inch or so when I braked hard - hmm- I'll need to add that to the list too - I just don't remember feeling that before...

Needless to say, and I am sure you all understand, I am depressed. I have read many posts from others, and each time I knew it could happen to me, but then again it is far from a common occurance in my world - it has been at least 18 years since the last time I had to fill out accident reports, and the first time for the Vette. The silver lining here is that no one was physically injured, and that my baby kept me safe even while being assulted by that beastly pickup.

So now I am thinking that the rest of the day is going to involve spending quality time with my buddy Jack, while I sit in the garage trying to comfort my baby (and myself).

OMG! Thank goodness no one was hurt. Really, really sorry to hear about this but she'll be good as new before you know it.

I, in fact, would make her better than new by upgrading the rear fascia with the Specter Werkes rear fascia. Heck, the rear has to be replaced anyway, right?

Best of luck in the repair.

Sorry to hear about your "violation". That's one of my fears. Seems like people get so close to the rear bumper of the Vette. Much closer than when I drive one of my other cars. I've been stopping further and further back and watching my rear view mirror. When I see someone getting close, I move up. Of course, they also move up. Then I start playing my "are you an *ss game". I move up an inch and see if they move up. If they do, I move up another inch. Over and over just to see if they will keep moving up. Some people are jerks.

He probably wasn't going quite 30 mph with the relatively minor damage. But it's a wonder you didn't attack him.

My car was purchased by the previous owner on March 12, 2003. According to the CarFax report, it had 'minor damage' in the rear ... the next day, March 13!

Yours can likely be fixed fine. There's absolutely no evidence of any problem with mine. I assume they replaced the rear fascia.

Even though you feel OK now, aches and pain can occur days later.See a doctor and don't sign anything until you're sure everythings good.

I am so glad to hear that you are okay.

As a note to all, being in a Corvette during a rear end accident is SAFER than being in a 4WD Jeep.

Last January I was hit (at a stop light). The accident caused my seat back to break (a situation that is not incurred in a Corvette).

To date I have undergone 6 major operations, and have another scheduled for this December.

Doctors have told me that it would have been less of an issue, medicaly, if I were in one of my Verts!

Bummer for sure. I'm glad your ok but I do understand how you feel. Wasn't your fault and your car is injured! Hopefully you'll be "as good as new" in no time.

ptdrummer,

I'm deeply sorry for your loss.... If I were you, I'd make sure you not only get the money for repairs & rental reimbursement of EQUIVALENT car, but I'd also demand reimbursement for loss of value due to the fact that your car even when repaired will forever carry the stigma of a vehicle that's been in an accident.

If you wanna PM me for more specifics, feel free.

Vaughn

Default Check Your Car Carefully!

Several years ago I was hit in the rear much like you. What happened was that the frame was kicked forward and everything else seemed to stand still while the frame was kicked out from under it. The back of my seat broke and I was laying down in the rear seat. Everything loose in the car ended up in the back. Screws and bolts were sheared throughout the car.

You said your seat was loose. Is the catch that holds up the back broken? Are any of the bolts or motor mounts under it sheared off?

Picture bashing individual parts all over the car with a sledge hammer. That is what happened to your Vette! You owe it a through check. Lift it up and inspect the undersides and all of the major mounts carefully.

Body shops will fix what is obviously broken. The question you have to ask is what is broken or almost broken that you can't see and may fail a year or two from now.

Better safe than sorry!

For your Vette

Glad you're OK

I know how you feel but it'll be good as new.

A few years ago when I got my new Grand Prix, a guy in
a Saturn coupe rear ended me. His car was was curled
halfway up the hood and if it weren't for the two holes from
his license plate in my bumper, you'd never know I was touched.

When you're hit squarely bumper to bumper, the "hitter" will lose.

...George

Glad you are ok. My wife got rear ended 2 months after she got her Mustang. It was a 16 year old girl who just got her car that hit her. The girls car got totalled...the Mustang still had a lot of damage ($2500) but it was easily fixed and you can't even tell it was hit.

Your baby will be fixed again.

Your first response should have been "i'm o.k. but let me check with my lawer first".
But really glad to hear you are o.k. Did you air bag go off?

Glad to hear that you are allright. I have had my vette for less than three months, and I have had three near misses. One blew a red light. One turned out in front of me, and on my first night out with the vett a mini van with many kids cilmbing around in it decided to do a rapid lane change into me squeezing me in to a concrete wall. I had to lock up the brakes, and nearly got rear ended. I managed to come out of this with out a scratch . It almost seems like there aiming at me . It never happens when I am in my company truck.

Had the same thing happen to me a few years ago in my old C4.

25+ mph hit did not even break the taillights but there was some hidden damage. Crushed the foam behild the bumper AND caved in the gas tank. Have things looked at real close before you sign off.

....Maybe you could get free cable for life as punitive damages?
