Im wondering if my corvette didnt have more miles on it than it says since i bought a 2000 with only 20xxx miles on it and there seems to be a bit of valvetrain noise and one of the screws holding the cluster shroud in is the incorrect screw.Maybe just me but im wondering. Is there any way of seeing if it has more miles than the cluster reads?
i'm goign to take a stab at this, but i may be crazy but i sware i've seen that the actual milage is stored in more than one place in the car, see if this can be confirmed and or scanned at the dealership.
However, the dealship can run a check on your VIN number to tell you the service history of the car. For example, if the tire sensors were replaced at 50k miles, they'd know it (assuming the repair happened at a GM dealership). If it had 30K miles on it two years ago, it's highly unlikely that it has 20K now!
I love shopping for used cars. I just bought a 2003 Toyota Corolla for my granddaughter.
I too try to determine the mileage on the car in two ways. The first thing I look at is the odometer to see what it says. Then, I look at the wear in the seat to see if it matches the miles on the car. Second, I look at the wear on the brake pedal to see if that matches the miles on the car. People who roll back mileage never change the brake pedal for some reason. After you look at some honest cars, the dishonest ones show themselves rather quickly. Tires is another area that can be of help. If the car came with a treadwear rating of 300 meaning 30,000 mile tires then the fronts should be two thirds gone. If they have been replaced at 20K, I would wonder why someone would do that.
If the seller has records you usually have an honest car. Lastly, you can check with the dealer that surviced the car to see what it was in for last and the mileage.
Run a Car Fax, it should give you all the information you need.
Carfax is a waste of money IMO, I crashed a camaro, traded it in, no word of anything on the carfax, not even until today.
Carfax is only good if the owner reports all the info to the right sources.
If I never bring my car in for service (DYI) Never change my auto reg (DMV) never crash it and report it to the DMV, I could swap out clusters 5 years from now with one that has 100000 miles on it and say I kept it in the garage.

That was the worked performed to the vehicle, then the dealership did the colum recall with 23511 miles and last sold it to you with 23539 miles. Now if you still question the mileage let your dealer know your concerns, there is a black box on most vehicles and the C5 has one, that will let them know the actual miles on the vehicle. They will compare it to the odometer at that point you will have your answer.
You do have a 3 Months 3000 Miles of bumper to bumper warranty in your case expires at 26539.
wow what did i have to eat today.Geez i had no idea i would get all that info thanks man. Where is the black box located?
You don't have access to it. Your dealer will plug their computer harness under the steering wheel there is a OBD-II connector there. That is where they can recode your vehicles computer and extract any info that they need from the car.

The previous Owner could of tapped into the Vehicle speed sensor and do a Toggle to turn ON/OFF the Mileage cluster when he wanted.
My new '04 had some bad pixels in the DIC, and they replaced the cluster. My vette came out of the shop with fewer miles than when it went in. Obviously they didn't take good notes before they removed the bad cluster. It looks like they used the mileage from my previous visit (a week or so earlier) when they witnessed the problem and ordered the replacement cluster.
