Default Just Did a Rain Driving Event..

... and it was really fun.

I would have, of course, preferred a fast and dry track But I am glad that I did it. It taught me a lot about my Z that I would never have learned on a dry track. Two solid days of driving right at the edge of control is very educational. And the good thing is, the speeds are low enough that there is litte danger or wear on your car. Finding the limits at high speeds is much riskier.

One thing I learned is the Z06 is not an optimal wet road car. I am not used to being passe by everybody I suppose I can look at this as a "character builder". However, it was managable and I was able to go fast enough to keep things interesting.

I also learned that getting passed by Mini Coopers really pisses me off. But I gotta admit, the Mini really handles the twisties well in the rain. Oh well, I'll let 'em have their day.

Check out this cool video of a Corvette at the Motorsport Ranch. This is the track where the DE was held. The video was shot on a much nicer day.

Seems it rains every time I go to the track. But it is a great way to learn. nothing like watching the dryline form or being able to feel the edge .......great experience!

What tires were you on? I've raced in the rain once, but not on the stock F1 SCs. I have a set of Goodyear racing rain tires. Very $$$, but also very very good in the rain. The stock F1 SC is optimized for the dry and is okay in the damp, but if there is lots of standing water, it can't channel water fast enough.

I know what you mean about driving in the rain though. Lots of car control practice.

I was running Kuhmo Extas, not great, but controllable. I live in Texas, I can't justify the price of rain tires cause it doesn't rain all that often. But it sure did this weekend, there was a small stream running down the center of one straight . Had to adjust the line to compenstate.

Yeah, car control was an adventure, also the conditions changed frequently and you had to adjust your line multiple times.

Rick

Yes driving inthe rain does build character. The rain line is any place there is NOT standing water or streams running accoss or down the track.

IMHO doing a DE in the rain does help your car handling abilites even in the dry.

Glad to hear you had a good time.

My last two autocrosses of the season were in the rain. The last one featured a stream running through the first turn. Not fun, especially on OEM tires. A waste of perfectly good horsepower, frankly. The Subarus had a good time, though.

The Kumho Ecsta MX is actually a fairly decent rain tire. Channels water much better than the stock F1 SCs. But, you are right, it is hard to put the power down in the wet!

Hey Rick!
I did the same event! It sucked at first, but I quickly figured out that I could learn much more on a wet track. I did the event on the stock Supercars and have no complaints. I thought they handled very well.

I agree that it was a character builder. Those Mini's were doing great!

I love driving in the rain! Lower speeds, more lurid slides, etc. Some of my fav laps in the c5 were at gingerman in the wet. Once straight I could gently go WOT with the street stock tires in 3rd gear. As I recall a wrx sti pretty easily passed me and pulled away, but I still love the rain. It just sucks to hang out in.

Rain events are great to learn... but not too much fun for me. I love to be able to really use this car and not get thrown in jail. "fingers crossed for this weekend at VIR"
