The Cam gives it away along with the Nitrous setup, other than that kind of stuff it's Flawless/Stock . . The Guys (service manager & C5 Techs ) at the Dealer know me from my 99' FRC.

The guys @ Centry 21 Motorsports charge about $2500 for the change over. I don't know what all that includes.

I do know this, my uncle built and ran the first ever rear engine dragster in North Texas in the 50's. He also built most of the racing motors for one of the big Chevy clubs in PA.

If you ask him an Automatic is the only way to run a true drag car. The more "things" you take away from the driver the more consistent and faster he will be!

Identical cars with the same driver will average better times with a properly configured auto (converter, etc...). Mostly because the 1 time you miss a shift will kill your average!

So, fellow members, one of the questions was about which of the roofs offers the best support of the chassis, or the stiffest chassis, I don't know how to say. I always thought the vert seriously missed the roof when it came to stuff like the strength of construction and that verts were heavier for trying to compensate and add support and rigidity to the chassis. Am I wrong about this? I assumed that is the reason for the roof of the Z. Also, I need clarification from Johnny P., when I asked about only changing trans after the warranty period. Is that right? I'm learning stuff. If I'd known about CF in 1964, I'd still have that silver SWC. It was incredible at that time. Even magical.

It is my understanding the ZO6 has the roof it does because of the "built in roll cage". I was told by the one of my club members this helps the car to qualify for certain types of racing without having to add a cage.

It is my understanding it also adds stiffness to the frame!

Auto's are better for the strip, because of the consistant nature of their shifting. In my '97 (auto)when you hit 2nd with n2o (spraying through shifts) you better have some "adult depends" handy, if your a passanger, because it's going to break sideways, and there is no AH just driver skill. I'd love to give the nay sayers a ride. Now, my Z06 when speed shifting at 6500rpm is quite a ride also, but there are many more varables to be consistant like the auto. I think it is ls1tech.com that keeps a running list on the top 50 fastest cars on the forum and 95% or so are automatics with a few z06's with 6-speeds. IMO the guys ranking the change to automatics are ignorant of the facts. As all of us are making changes/mods of some sort to our cars.

I agree that automagics are more consistant at the drag strip. If the original poster is not planning to drag race, then the argument of a better drag car is not really relevent.

Ok, granted that may not be relevant for original poster, but is for others that have made the switch. Some guys don't want to shift manually or don't have the ability and I guess my point is, if someone wants to make a mod that works for them why should others try to talk that decision down? Imo auto's do have there place in some Z06's.

SimonStern & Robert56 I agree with You that in Drag Racing an Auto is more consistent and it would be the way to go for that , Sure I miss banging gears in the Z but I have my 99' FRC to do that with , Thanks for Your understanding .

So, one doesn't change transmissions until the car's warranty is over, and the hardtop shoud give more support and fewer squeaks and rattles over time, right?

The law is that the manufacture can't deny a warranty claim because of a modification unless they prove that the modfication caused the failure. I think they would be hard pressed to prove that changing to an automagic would cause a problem with the motor, or anything else like the window regulators, radio, etc. Your warranty on the tranny would be in question.

The difference in rigitity on the street would be minimal at best. You really won't notice any difference unless you boost the power way up, or take it to a road course.

I have not driven a coupe, but the Z06 can be very loud due to the exhaust and 295 series tires. I wouldn't expect much difference in terms of rattles and sqeaks.

yeah that would just be wrong. Even soulless, brainless GM knows better than to build an extremely kickass roadgoing track car and then drop an auto in it so billybob can be more consistent at the strip

Actually I think I'd enjoy my Z06 more if it was an auto (putting on flame suit). I know I'd feel more free to thrash it without worrying about broken driveline parts.

You have to decide on your goals for the car.

Right now my goal is just to run a 9.9x. I know I can do that with a 6 speed.

But if I ever decide to go faster, I know there is now way I am sticking with a 6 speed. Auto is the way to go for drag racing.
