Hello. I'm interested in a C5 ZO6 but don't want to bother shifting in miserable traffic two hours every day. Is anyone successfully converting ZO6 to automatic? I'm not at all knowledgeable about such matters so I don't understand why it isn't possible.

I think I have read about 3-4 people for sure have changed the car over. From what I remember its a pretty easy switch.
I mean its not like its a different car or anything. It is still a C5. They come with either a 6 speed or a 4 speed auto. Everything just pretty much bolts up once you have all the right parts.
This should be in the C5 Z06 section.(moving it there now)
BTW, anyone who complains about shifting in traffic isn't driving properly. I drive a stick all the time and have no trouble. My foot never touches the clutch pedal unless I come to a complete stop.
I've been in some serious bumper to bumper traffic, all you have to do is leave a little space between you and the guy in front.

Do the impossible, Try finding someone who wants to swap to a 6 speed so You can save Money by swapping parts ( Bell Housing Torque Tube etc.) Labor wise Your looking around $ 2000.00 and whatever upgrades You want (Bigger Converter etc.).
mallet does the conversion, i spoke to chuck mallet at corvettes at carlisle, he quoted me $5,500 to do the swap. all brand new gm parts, he swaps the entire wiring harness, no splicing. he's done about 5 of them, he reported no problems at all....good luck..
sounds pretty silly to me. Just buy a C5 auto in the first place 9 (and save money at that). If you drive in bumper to bumper traffic all day, 350hp will work as well as 405hp

Mod UP a C5, don't mod DOWN a Z06.
How do You figure Your modding down a Z06 ? B.T.W. my "mod down Z " would give Your Vette a nice run down the 1/4 .

Anything that detracts from the performance would be modding down.
Could you beat me in a 1/4mi, yep I'm sure you can. Can my car beat yours around a road course? Yep, probably can. However nice that may be, it's not the point.
It all depends on what you are looking to do, and I don't think "race car" was the original poster's goal. (At least it was not mentioned.)
I am not trying to put down automatics at the drag strip, just saying it would problably be easier and cheaper to make an automatic C5 faster than a Z06 automatic PLUS it negates at least part of what makes the Z06 a Z06.
I see no reason to change the tranny. I was under the impression that automatic tranmissions lose power and are for girls. Im sorry, I don't mean to offend anyone. But why mess up a almost perfect car

Do you want to roll, or really operate a motor vehicle. I'm sorry I just think that a sports car should be a manual transmission. I didn't mean to step on anyones toes.

I'm enjoying this banter. It's really very clever, I just like the styling of the Z better than the coupe, and I don't want to shift because I'm old, tired, and depressed. And like the man, said, "I just want to roll." By the way I greatly appreciate the member refering me to the dealer in New York. I'm in Miami. Does anyone know of anyone down here that has experience swapping transmissions?

[QUOTE=thcomoo]I just like the styling of the Z better than the coupe, and I don't want to shift because I'm old, tired, and depressed./QUOTE] with the styling -- for some reason, the hardtop always appealed to me more than the coupe (maybe it's the 30+ years influence of my garage ornament). in fact, didn't the first c5 (pre-z06) have the option of vert, coupe or hardtop? somebody told me the reason chevy picked the hardtop for the z06 was 'cuz h/t sales were lagging... i like thinking they did it for a more altruistic reason, like saving a few pounds...
