Default How to take off shiftknob???

Hey guys,

I wanted to replace my shiftknob, I tried to take off the stock peice but im not sure how? On my other cars they would just come off by loosening left. I tried but it didnt really move and I didnt want to try to hard and break something. I pulled the 6 spd cap off and there was a metal tab inside played with it a little but nothing. Anyone want to tell me how to do this this simple thing!..

You were so close. Inside there is a key that has to be pried out. Use a screwdriver and a piece of rubber to protect the ****. Pry out the key and the **** will unscrew. Doug

Go to the Vette Essentials web site (www.vetteessentials.com) and they have good instructions for getting it off. I used a pair of vice grips and locked them down on the "key". Then I took a hammer and tapped up on the side of the vice grips. They key popped right out. Then you can unscrew the ****.

I thought I was going to destroy it, then it just popped. The vice grips mentioned in the thread work well with a screwdriver underneath for leverage.

You may also want to take a look at my procedures. If possible, get ahold of the same style visegrips shown in this procedure:

Good luck getting the pin out. Mine got chewed up by vice grips and a screwdriver and then a corner broke off. I ended up taking a hack saw and cutting the shifter in half so I could put in my Hurst.

I would suggest that you use two screw drivers, protect the leather top of the shift **** if you are going to reuse it. Tap the screw drivers one at a time under the key from opposite sides using a hammer. Tap is the operative word. They will slide under the key. After they are under the head of the key apply downward pressure on the screw driver handles one side at a time, alternating. They key will come out quite easily.

I tried the vice grip method and it would not work at all. The two screw drivers with gentle prying will work easily. Make sure the screw drivers are good guality with hardened shafts and relatively thin blades so they can be softly tapped under the keyway head.

Tapping the screw driver from the botton of the visegrips worked very well for me both times I have done this. First was to install new **** from Ken and then the second was to shorten the shifter with my roto tool. Each time it was not hard.

Just remember....do NOT get in a hurry!

A word of caution: More than one CF member has sheared off the "T" -ends of the demon key by prying them up with screwdrivers. I have removed at least three stock ***** by using visegrips and in every case, the pin was pulled out unscathed. The key is using needlenose visegrips and gripping the key across its ends. Tap on the visegrips while pulling them up (as shown in my procedure) and I guarantee the pin will be pulled out.

OK I've got the message on removing the stock ****. But I have a Billet Alum replacement but no jam nut or lock nut. How do I position it correctly to line up the logo on the top.

I had the same issue. I just used teflon tape, and used trial-and-error to figure out how much I needed before I could CRANK it all the way and still have the shift pattern lined up. Worked fairly well... Dunno if locktite would be a good way to go or not.

The way to take this off is remove the key that keep the shift **** from turning. Take a pair of vice grips, clamp down on the key, then gently tap up on the side of the vice grips. The key should pop out. Then you can turn the **** to take it off. Visit the Vette Essentials web site (www.vetteessentials.com) and they have some instructions and pictures of this.
