GM never put a 5-spd in the L98 350 Gen III F-Body. That must have been a custom setup. I've owned the following:
78 Z28 4-speed, 3:73 rear
80 Z28 auto
84 Z28 HO 5-speed
85 IROC Z28 TPI auto, custom built motor
85 Vette Z51 4+3
All of these cars were much slower than the Z06 but they were respectable at the time of ownership.
I've had many fast cars before the Z. The fastest was a 23 Ford T bucket with a blown 355 Chevy. 550 hp and 1650 lbs with me in the car. Had the car for five years and never did hit redline in second. It would accelerate so fast you would have a hard time holding your head up. I miss that car.
I've driven a few fast (to me) cars. Pretty much, all of them have been Camaros, and more setup for 1/4 mile ('81 Z28 I used to have with a 383 stroker, '02 Z28 I currently own, and a '73 Camaro my Dad owns, with a nicely built 350 in it ). I love my Z28, and it's been my daily driver for over 2 years. The '73 is probably the "fastest" car I've driven (I figure it's in the power range of a Z06, based on its 12-second timeslip) but I'm now getting an "itch" to move up a class, and I'm looking at Z06's.
.....reading all your responses in this thread certainly hasn't put me off looking either!!
.....guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.

1987 Buick Turbo Regal. Still have it. When stock it went 14.7, Now, should go 10.8-11.2 but I have only made two passes on the new setup. It traps low 120's @ 21 psi boost w/ a 2.6 sec 60 foot because of not enough converter (3000 stall only) One day it'll run right, now it just sits behind the Z06 in the garage...
My Z28 has a fully-forged 355 with an ATI D1SC pushing 14#. CNC Stage III heads, Schneider blower cam and all the stout suspension parts. It has 632 rwhp and 554 rwtq on a mustang dyno and has run 11.65 @ 123 mph at 5800 ft. (with a 10,000 DA...) It could run 10s at altitude, but we've got it detuned to stay above 11s (it's a 'vert.) I really don't want to fully cage it...
Anyway, it's very fast, but not nearly as much fun to drive as the Z06 (except at the track, of course...)
Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
