Default New Guy - Hello

Hello everyone, my names Mark, I live in Orange County California and I bought my Z06 new in February 2002. I've got 36k miles on the car now and am ready to have a Pro-charger and headers installed.

A short story about when I bought my Z. I was ready to buy a used Porsche 911 (I use to own an '83 911 and was having dreams about that car). My wife suggested I look at a new one so I would have a warranty. I figured if I was going to spend $70k on a new Porsche I should at least look at a Z06 and went to several Chevy dealers and they all laughed at me when I asked if they had a Z06 (the standard line was - give us a $10k deposit and we'll get you one in six months). When I couldn't find a new Z06, and I didn't want to wait six months to get a new car, I went to a dealer in Newport Beach that sold Porshes, Rolls, Audi and Chevy Suburabans & Corvettes. When the salesman approached me I told him I was looking for a 911 and while we're walking out on the lot to look at what he had I decided this guy probably won't insult me or laugh to hard since I might buy a $70k car from him - so I asked "you wouldn't happen to have a Z06?" He looked at me and said "we just put one on the lot this morning". I was stunned, he went on to say a guy had ordered it several months ago and they just got it in the day before but the guy's financing fell through so they just put it on the lot two hours before I got there. He also said there were three people coming down that afternoon to look at it (and I believed him because the Z06 was so hard to get back in 2002).

We made a Bee-Line to the Z06, I drove it - fell in love with it - and decided I wanted the car but I had to ask my wife (I was by myself) before I would buy it and I couldn't reach her - she was out shopping and didn't answer her cell phone. Ten minutes later my wife calls back, I tell her about the car and she says "it's your car, do what you want". The salesman then tells me "your so lucky, you know how many men leave here crying and begging their wife to let them buy one of these cars?"

Needless to say I took the Z06 home with me and haven't dreamt about a 911 since.

Great car and drive it every chance I can. Ironically since we have two boys (4 and 6 years old) I end up driving my Explorer or my wife's car more than the Vette on weekends, but during the week, unless it's raining, I can't wait to drive the Z06.

I've really enjoyed reading this forum over the past few days and I look forward to participating when I can.

Thanks,
MarkT

Welcome to the forum, Mark. You made the right choice and like you, I tend to drive my Z28 more than the Z06 from practical necessity but it keeps the miles off the Z06 and I can't see me selling it anytime soon.

Mark,

Great story. I love reading about that first vette drive/purchase, it takes me back and leaves me with a great feeling!

Memories are great!

Welcome Mark.

Both are great cars, but if you ever want another Porsche... get a turbo air cooled car. IMO those were the last of the true Porsches.

Glad to have you on the team. What did you think about the 911 as your everyday car.

Welcome to the forum...what took you so long to find out about this place?!

I drive my 01 Z06 whenever I can too....cause it's my only car! And I love it! Docile enough to get 25 mpg+ on the freeway and while babying it during bad weather, but also able to get 5+ mpg when I unleash all 400+ hp!

Thanks all, this is really a lively board.

Goose JR.

I loved the 911 once I learned how that rear engine would squat if you punch the car in a turn. It took about 10k miles to get use to the rear engine and the proper "squating" technique. As an everyday driver it was great - by the same token I was single then and didn't have a family. It was alot of fun until I realized it couldn't hang with big blocks in straight away encounters so I figured I needed a V8 and bought a 69 Mustang convertible and began some heavy mods (on the Mustang). Ironically, when I bought the 69 Mustang convertible I would get more compliments on the Mustang (even though it was a POS) then I would on my new 911SC with BBS rims even though the 911 was a much better car. I still have the Mustang sitting in the garage.

OutlawDon,
I was spending most of my Internet time on boating sites. As soon as my warranty expired (and the fact I could not pull on a 4 door AMG) I was ready to start modding the Z06 and began searching the www.
I have mixed emotions about not finding this site sooner. You guys have me wanting to Mod the Vette today. If I knew you guys had done what you have, I probably would have began the heavy mods the day after that AMG stayed right next to me with his wide-eyed girlfriend hanging on for dear life!

All the mods you guys have done also helps me understand how an inconspicuous, well kept, Red C4 coupe was able to pull on me between stop lights.

Thanks,
MarkT
