Just a heads-up for those of you with the column lock bypass:
I stopped at the ATM last week and since my son was in the C5, I was going to leave the key in the ignition. However, when I opened the door, the chime kicked in and I thought I'd try something I used to do in my older cars. I pulled the key out of the ignition and reinserted it. The chimes still sung, so I left the key in and shut the door.
When I returned, I started the car, started backing out, and then the engine died. I looked at the D.I.C. and saw "Pull key, wait 10 seconds", which is the same message you normally see before seeing "Service column lock". Totally puzzled (since I installed the CLB many months ago), I pulled the key, waited 10 seconds, started the car and drove off. The only thing I can think of is that the combination of removing and reinserting the key within a short period of time somehow confused the ignition circuit.
So, if this happens to you after performing the sequence mentioned above, fear not - it's just a glitch.

That's exactly it.
The "pull key" message is not always indicative of a column lock problem.
This message can happen for many reasons...basically, anytime the BCM "gets confused" during startup, it will happen. Some of the common causes (and I'm sure there's more) are:
The quick key out/in/restart will do it every time.
A dirty key resistor pellet will cause it.
The column lock malfunctioning can also cause it.
Because the latter of the above cases has proven to be very common...all too often, people tend to automatically equate this error message to the column lock, and that's not always the case.

Thanks for the heads up. Did you have the recall done for your car to die like that?
Yes, the recall was done shortly before my column lock actuator died an instant death. Nothing could get that actuator to work, so I had my car towed to the dealership. They pronptly installed a new actuator and I'll bet it would've lasted another three years, but I figured since I already had the CLB, sitting in my toolbox, I may as well put it in, especially since I now know how long a CL could last!

Thanks! It's important as many of us as possible know this, as it is a bit disconcerting.
I have been playing with this pull key thing ever since dealer did the K harness thing. I did subsequently (whatta word!) disconnect the actuator portion of the harness. Vette is an A4. Cleaned the pellet, etc. and still get this message sporadically...
It has become a game to me.. Seems to happen on first key insert after car has sat for a day. Doesn't seem to come up on subsequent insertions on the same day. I appear to have some success by pushing the key firmly inward upon insertion.
As I say, it's just plain goofy and has become a game to me. My only other options are dealer (NOT!) or drive myself nuts. (already there)
Actually, the system is very powerful. When sensing the CLB impedance, the computer reroutes the Column Lock ciurcuit and bypasses the lock connector thus reinstalling the column lock.

In otherwords, on my A4 for example no concern re: column actually locking but the pull key deal will be a "live with" thing???????

I installed the CLB last summer, have a 2001 MN6 and I have seen the messages on a few occasions, mostly after changing/connecting the battery or working on my car, where I probably was performing quick in/out/etc. My heart skips a beat whenever I see the message, but I know it is temporary since the CLB is in and functioning. BTW, GM has not sent me recall info...yet.

AI LIVES IN OUR C5s!

Only under certain circumstances. This instance was the first time it happened to me since the dreaded column lock fiasco.

That's almost certainly what happened and you'll even find that listed as one of the causes of this message in your owner's manual. I've had this message several times in the past and all one does is remove, possibly clean the key, reinsert and you're all done -- no CLB needed.

Once upon a time...............
It's funny, so many people start having this problem AFTER they get the column lock done. I had never seen that message until I had the recall done and in the last 2 months, I'll bet I've had it come up a dozen times. Damn, I wish I had never done the recall.

Mark
Mark, I couldn't agree more. Obviously some small glitch causing this that GM apparently chooses to ignore. As I stated above, seems like after the initial "pull key" on any given day, it tends not to repeat the scenario that same day. Or not....(now that's definitive) the game goes on................

And this is related to the CLB because??? It isn't. As others already stated, quickly removing and reinserting the key is your answer.

I think that what he is saying is the pull key thing started after the clb was done with the K harness. The pull key msg.in my case never came up until AFTER the K harness bipass was done.
