What capacity hydraulic floor jack should I use if I want to lift my C5 using the cross members? Wal-Mart has an aluminum one that's nice and light but it's only 1 1/2 ton. Do you think it's safe? Also, any suggestions on jack stands and jacking points? Thanks in advance for the feedback.
maybe i should have ask'd that question b4 i purchased a jack on sale 4 $30 (regluar $79) from a local auto parts store...the jack gave out and the car almost fell on me.. :o

1 1/2 ton jack is fine - ALWAYS use jack stands though as everyone else has said - ANY hack can have a failure regardless or weight rating.
I have a $50 2-ton and never once got under the car without having jack stands in-place. Jacks are designed with a built-in safety factor but regardless, use stands or ramps if you need to go underneath.

1.5 ton should be fine, but I have a 2 ton floor jack that I use. A little extra can't hurt. I always use jack stands though to be sure it doesn't fall.
Thanks for the input everyone. I don't think I was clear enough. I will absolutly use jack stands, just wondered what capacity and where to put them. I think I will buy a larger jack. Thanks again.
By the way ET, my arm is killing me!!!

I used a hockey puck and the spare tire jack from my neon on one of the sides. Once I got it snugged up, I used an air gun to turn the bolt on the jack. No sore arms! It was the only jack that I owned that was low enough!
I was only doing brakes, and had no intention getting under the car....
I just bought the jack you are talking about. I've only used it once but jacked the front up and put rhino ramps underneath the wheels. Not a bad looking jack, but as with all jacks safety first. I thought about a better one like the Sears, but all I really bought it for was oil changes.
