Default Diablo Predator...worth it?

When is the Predator's worth out the door? I know that if you do a head/cam package the predator won't work. What about a headers, torque converter, intake manifold, Throttle Body?

Better off paying for a dyno tune with ls1 edit IMO

So how would it be for a torque converter, headers, or intake manifold? Mainly a torque converter right now.

Well that is not at all accurate.... You can get free custom tunes with the Predator to go with just about any mod, then you can fine tune the custom tune on a dyno. BUT if you are serious go with hp tune or ls1 edit (if you have no other option) and get some dyno tune time.

I have the Predator, and are going to stop using its tunes in favor of hp tuner with my supercharger.

Do I really need a custom tune for installing a SS3600 Torque Converter?

If I had to do it all over, I would have skipped the Diablo........didn't do much at all for me. $350 down the drain.

Diablo is great if you wish to change your shift points without installing a shift kit, freeing up some ponies by changing the factory tune (too rich from factory) and a number of other cool things (like diags while you are driving, clearing codes etc.).

I like it over LS1edit only because I do not have the time (or brains ) to learn LS1edit in depth (though I try, I try )

The Predator has "performance tunes" right in the box and as mentioned you can get custom tunes. It is not in the same catagory as LS1edit or HP Tune, but by the same token you do not have to be a rocket scientist to use it, as you need to be with LS1edit & HP Tune.

So you are paying $350-$400 for convenience, really.

LS1edit will do EVERYTHING and then some. I bought both and I do not regret either purchase. Diablo got me started and got me where I wanted to be - then I moved to LS1edit - and as I said - I am still learning what I can (and should!!) do with it.

My 0.02 cents worth

EG

EnglandGreen; cool post. I think everyone values your opinion.

Too many times the "not grown up yet" post here :

do exactly what I did... nothing less, and for gods sake nothing more or I'll not look like a King. And I can call something junk, crap, or worthless although I have no first hand knowledge/experience of the product.

we need more like you.

Mike,

High praise!!! Thank you. Thank you very much!!!

I bought my first Vette at the end of September 2004, and all I know of C5s (other than what I have read or knew before from experience) I learned here.

I'm just trying to give back to this Forum the little I know. It has been an invaluable source of knowledge, erudition and laughs.

Great folks and great info (if you ignore the few fools).

EG

This is a copy of a post i just did over in the scan and tune area, hope it helps:
I finally used my Predator for the first time today. Baseline info: 2001 A4, 315 gears, So. Cal at about 400ft above sea level, running 91 octane (the highest normal pump gas we have here), only performance mods I have are Stingers on both ends.

Saved the factory tune and loaded the performance tune without issue. By the way, it was very simple and straight forward.

Now onto the “how did it work” part…

First thing I noticed was that the shifting was sharper and more solid. (Both are good things) Drove around for awhile and the car does shift up/down better/quicker.

Now as far as increased power: I gained at least 150 RWHP!!! Just joking, couldn’t help myself!!! I really could not tell much of a difference other that the improved shifting.

I will send my info to runninwiththedevil and have him do some changes based on intake and my Borlas.

Is it worth the cost you ask??? Depends, if I was not going to do anything else at all (no oversized rims, higher rear end, lower temp thermostat, change A/F, etc. - which all can be changed with Predator) and I had a manual transmission, no (IMHO). With an automatic transmission, maybe… I do plan on do some more “things” so it wasn’t a waist (but if it wasn’t too late to return it, I would). Now if you can read you’re A/F mix or if you want to tweak things until the cows come home, well than it will work, but I would be looking at some of the other tuners out there.

If you do not live near a good tuner (or you are doing standard mods), this might be a good call. If you live near a good tuner (in my case I live between A&A and LAPD), and you are not doing mods every other week, I think going and having it tuned a pro on a Duno might just be a better use of your money. Don’t get me wrong, I love what it has done for my shifting!!

Just my 2 cents… feel free to share yours!! -Steven
