We are all familiar with the deaded lock up of the steering column, Gm's recall "fix" and the after market CLB. My question is, how many forum members have never had a problem with their car and have not installed the by-pass? What year is your car and how many miles are on it?
I Have The Envelope With The Notice On My Desk, I Look At It Everyday Wondering Should I Or Shouldn't I? I Am Not A Lucky Person By Nature. Almost Like Playing "wheel Of Fortune" Everyday Huh?
I did this a while back. Since then, my column locked (actuator failure) and I installed the bypass. Remember, milage has NOTHING to do with the failures. It is the total number of actuations that the column lock mechanism has gone through. My car lasted through about 1500 actuations. (each start is an actuation) The dealer replaced the actuator, but I didn't want to run the experiment again. Anyway, enjoy!
1997 MN6 Coupe born April 15, 1997. No Bypass, 53,000 miles and No column lock to this point. I have no intention of letting the dealer perform the recall. I have helped a friend with a column lock using the TechTip for overcoming a locked column and it worked the very first time I tried. He's had no problems since.
2000 FRC 6 speed, had dealership do update, no problems before or since. 50,000 miles car runs and works excellent ( I'm knocking on wood) We'll see how it goes.
'98 with 19k miles built in late Feb of the same year.
My car was included in the first column lock recall, which my dealer performed (replaced the lock module, I think). I've never had a column lock problem. I have the notice for the most recent recall but I haven't scheduled it yet.
'99 with 58000 miles. I bought it in '01 with just under 15000 mi and the column locked on delivery. The dealer repaired it and I haven't had any trouble since.
2002 with 18460 miles M6. I had to take it in. Mine locked up in front
of my house ...lucky me. It unlocked all by itself about 3 hours later and i took it staright to the dealer. Now I read that they only
reprogrammed by on-board computer and the problem might still not be fixed. GM whats up with that?

2000 w/ 40k. Bought it this past summer with 32k. Got the dreaded "Remove key wait 10 secs" message on the DIC while on a road trip about a week after I bought it. Researched the forum and was going to install the bypass but received the recall within a few weeks. Took it to the dealership and had the recall performed. No problems thus far.

Great survey! There are a couple of things lacking. There is no question about type of transmission. There is also no question about will your steering wheel turn with the key out. Many current owners of Vettes are probably enjoying the benefit of a CLB and don't even realize it is on there car.
