Car went dead with lots of loud bangs and thumps. I got the car home on a flatbed. Jack her up in the front. At the bottom of the bell housing there is hole the size of a half dollar. I can see the flywheel.
I can not start the car. When I tried, the starter started spinning and will not stop. Even with the key out, the starter just kept spinning, I had to disconnect the battery to get the starter to stop.
I know I lost drive. But, I am not sure if the engine stalled or not. The car drove and braked normal as I hit the side of the road.
I think the torque tube broke off of the flywheel and got the head of the starter too. Any other Ideas?
A friend had a similar thing happen, all it was was the starter mount broke off the starter sending metal everywhere and stalling the engine. There are two designs of starter mounts out now the old one thats breaks and the new redesigned one that is solid.Hopefully thats all that happened to you too.

Holy cow, that really sucks....
And here I am stressing about a tire that will not hold air at highway speeds...
Damn sorry to hear about this Fred Hopefully it isn't as bad as it looks. And if it is time for some major replacement--Call Norris Motorsports and upgrade
That looks like it got hit by part of the flywheel itself. As most old dragracers will tell you when the flywheel housing gets holed, its usually by a piece of the flywheel. You were lucky, most of the time the hole is on top and guys have lost aprts of their feet and legs from these. The NHRA used to require explosion blankets on all but stock classes. Big Daddy lost half his right foot in a similar accident that cut one of his slingshot dragsters in half.
Looks like the crank broke. Getting ready to put her on jack stands and pull that rubber cover that can be seen in the picture. That should give a better view of what happened. The flywheel does not look like were it should be.
Bob at Dragon's Breath Performance is pricing me a LS6.
