IMO it was the starter that started all this. Ive seen it befor on a friends a4! It in turn caused the flywheel to explode. Any of you a4 guys make sure you have the new starter design with the solid mount!!! The old design is hollow on the long bolt side the new design is solid aluminum on the long bolt side.
Not being a mechanic, what is the easiest way for a clueless moron, like me, to tell the difference?
Mike
If you look at the starter theres 2 bolts that hold it up one is short and one is long. On the starter mount where the long bolt goes through the mount, the mount is Hollow in the middle. "when the bolt is installed You can see the whole bolt from the outside there is no reinforcement" The new starter mount is solid aluminum it is not hollow if you go down to your auto parts store ask to see the differance if they still have an old one vs the new design. And yes Im sorry stupid me a automatic is called a flexplate and not a flywheel. Anyways My friend had the old style break at the mount and it sent chunks into the housing, although it didnt put a hole in anything but it sure made a heck of a noise and naturally he couldnt restart it cause the starter was hanging by one bolt.He was happy to find that it was just the starter though.

Starter mount did not break. I removed the starter to knock the bendix back down. The top of the starter was taken off by flying flexplate. Now I can connect the battery back-up.
The Flexplate is broken. And a big piece is wedge in at the top. This is what stoped the engine. Just hope the engine is OK. This all came apart at WOT.
We will know more on Thursday when we tear her down.

WOW, i really hope that's all it is, and i can't believe it just exploded like that! Time for more HP don't u think?
Looks like the crank broke. Getting ready to put her on jack stands and pull that rubber cover that can be seen in the picture. That should give a better view of what happened. The flywheel does not look like were it should be.
Bob at Dragon's Breath Performance is pricing me a LS6.

Could the ring gear have seperated from the flexplate? That happened to a freind of mine.
