Default Noisy When Cold ....

I apologize guys .. I posted this before but without the search .. I cant find it .. This issue is driving me crazy to say nothing about kicking the value of my vette down the hole.

The car sits for several hours and on startup it sounds like noisy lifters only perhaps tinnier. You cannot heard it in the car but outside it is quite noisy. Hood open, it is hard to isolate it to either head. It is a 2000 coupe(1G1YY22G2Y5128183) with 26K on it. I bought it a year ago in Austin, Texas. It now lives in a colder climate .. Buffalo, New York. I have a remote starter/alarm on it. I can start it with the remote and come out 10 minutes later, it is warm, and it still makes the noise until I "goose" the gas .. then it quiets down right away and sounds the way it always did. I notice no difference in the performance. I follow the computer on oil changes .. the dealer put in Mobil 1 .. 5W-30W. I have run a dealer maintenance check on it and it came back with just a seal replaced and some other stuff that did not seem to be important to this problem.

I was worried about piston slap so I took it to the dealer. Glen Campbell Chevrolet in Williamsville is the oldest and biggest Corvette dealer in upstate New York. I mentioned the gas guage problem(there is a factory fix now) with the vascillation in readings and he did not know what I was talking about .. kinda makes me wonder if I want it serviced there if he knows nothing about that .. anyway .. I mention piston slap and he turned green. I left it over night. Next day he claims it is a carbon buildup (they think) and the fix is to put two quarts of something or the other in the crankcase, run it for 20 minutes, let it sit for 2 hours, run it again for 20 minutes and then change everything ..cost $200 .. not covered by warranty .. he calls it routine maintenance. He feels that will solve most of the problem. What causes carbon buildup. I do drive the vette like I stole it . I love the acceleration and noise of the mufflers .. I would say I drive it hard but within engine limitations. It is an everyday driver. I am not sure what to do ... suggestions again please....

thanks .. Dave

BTW .. without the search feature .. How can you find out if someone has already asked the question or has a similar problem ....

Assuming it is not the normal piston slap noise that some experience, and that your engine internals are okay, switching to a higher-flow oil filter will probably quiet things down. Try using a Baldwin B31 at your next oil change.

I would try the carbon removal also. You can get the stuff from a forum vendor, or for more money, the clowns you have been going to. If the GM cleaner works, look on the internet at something called Fuel Power. This stuff will keep the carbon out if used on a regular basis.

A couple of things you might look into. Does the car use any oil? A good sign of piston ring failure wihich usually causes "piston slap". It could also be nothing more than noisy lifters. One thing to remember these cars have aluminum engine blocks and heads they are noisy as hell anyway.
I have also noticed as the weather gets colder in some cases the noise gets louder. The oil can't pump up as quickly to the valve train when it is cold.
If your'e not using excessive amounts of oil between changes I wouldn't be to concerned about it.

My 01 had piston slap, especially in cold weather, oil temperature had to reach about 150* before it quieted down. The car would use a quart of oil about every 2500 miles.
No slap or oil consumption in the 04 motor and it produces more power than the 01, never dynoed the 01 just definite SOTP difference.

There is a product called Sea Foam you can get at a NAPPA store. But all of these cleaners can harm your 02 sensor so be careful.

..although I use K&N after seeing the differences in pressure drops across many aftermarket filters. Surprisingly, the plain ol Fram had the least amount of pressure drop and the K&N a close second - not sure about the Baldwin. After installing the K&N, my piston slap all but disappeared.

I, also, have a 2000 with 17k and the same noisy lifters and am interested in any other info to correct this problem.
