Default Driveline Problem -- Need Help

Long story short -- I had a LUK clutch/flywheel installed a few months back, had balance issues with it, turned out to be quite a bit off. Clutch assembly was rebalanced/installed and now it still has a slight vibration but is better.

Now I have an occasional problem that occurs when stopped with the clutch pressed and the car in gear. A major vibration and loud sound (sounds like a garbage disposal) comes from what feels like the whole drivetrain. It can be felt through the shifter and can be heard from inside and outside of the car. It is hard to engage other gears when the noise happens. As soon as I put the car in neutral and release the clutch the noise stops. It tends to happen most when the frame is stressed (on some type of incline), or when going from 1st to reverse.

Has anyone had this problem? Any ideas on what to check? I am going to put it up on jackstands and start tearing it apart and would like to have some suggestions as to where to look.

I would recheck the torque on all of the drive line assembly fasteners. Especialy the bell housing. That is the first step. Seems like when you stress the drive line you get a misalignment issue. Check that and tell me what you find. You may be smelling the propellor shaft bushing in the center of the drive shaft. Just a guess.

Bill -- thanks for the reply.

I do get a slight rubber burning smell when the problem occurs.

Sounds like the pilot bearing is going....Did you change the pilot bearing when the new clutch was installed?

A new pilot bearing was used when the clutch was first installed, but not when it was rebalanced and re-installed.

was your Luk clutch/flywheel not balanced (as an assembly) from the factory? I just purchased one so would like to know if I should get mine spun/checked.

The LUK was out over 16 grams from the factory. Make sure you have yours balanced. Even after balancing mine, I still have vibrations. It seems that I am one of the lucky ones that had my engine partially balanced with flywheel weights.

Trust me, the last thing you want are vibration issues. I wish I kept the stock flywheel in instead of going to the aluminum. To get the vette back in shape I am most likely going to have to pull the motor and have it balanced or put a new engine in.

Jeff

Before I did all of that I would have to systymaticaly add weight to the flywheel to see if I could figure out where the imalance is and add weight in that area until it is acceptable.

Did you change the throw out bearing when you changed the clutch, if not from what you are describing it could the TB.
