Steering Column Lock FAQs - please read before you post (sticky please)
I have a 98 C5. This past weekend while I was on vacation I was leaving my sisters house to come home when the car shut off while I was driving at about 15-20 Mph. Once the car stopped, I put it back in park and tried to restart when I got the "pull key - wait 10 seconds error." I did as instructed, then tried to drive off when the car shut off again at 2mph. Then the dreaded "service column lock" message popped up. I have never heard of this before, so I opened the owner's manual to see what the hell that meant. After reading the BS in the manual, I decided to go to the internet to find out what could be done to correct the issue. I found this forum and post, and man, thanks for great information on this issue. After reading the posts, I tried all the suggestions..........
1.
pulling the fuses 25 and 232. removing the neg side of battery
3. clearing all the error codes, then removing the neg side of battery.
4. rubbing it to make it feel better
5. Cussing a lot
None of this worked, so I got it towed on Sunday to Palm Chevrolet in Ocala, FL for a Monday service date. To make a long story short......The Column Lock Motor that no longer locks anything was bad according to the mechanic. I felt that anything with this faulty recalled system should be fixed for free by Chevrolet, so I called them to see if they would pick up the tab. Well, they said no because the motor was not part of the recall in 04 or 06. The tab...$260 for motor, $287 for book maintenance time, total $611 with a $78 tow. Man, that sucked, but I had to get back home for work.
Here's the questions........
Would the column lock bypass (CLB) mentioned on this site and others have corrected this issue and made the car drivable while I was getting the error?
Is it a good idea to install a CLB on the car now to prevent this from happening again in the future? Also, what exactly does the CLB do?
Thanks, Rick

Since I have a CLB,
#1 Can I reset it by pulling the 23 and 25 fuse for 10 minutes with the battery still connected, and everything will be fine.
#2 Do I have to take it to the dealer to get flashed and all that Jazz?
(I'm reluctant to do that cuz my car has a tune and i lost my tune file and my cord is currently being exchange for a hptuners upgrade)
#2B Will my car go faster than 2mph?
Thanks for the help. I don't want to see that CLB message on startup. I want it fixed. HELP
I have a 2001 6spd C5. I bought it a couple months ago from my uncle.
The Column Lock recall was done by a Chevrolet dealer in 2005.
Like many others this fix, "Failed" yesterday..
The Steering Wheel is locked in Place and the fuel is cut off at 1.5 MPH.
I have tried all the quick fix tactics but none worked..
Obviously I should have joined this forum as sooner to find out i needed the CLB.
Now that the 1st fix has "Failed" is it to late for me to install the CLB to correct all my problems?
Will the CLB, unlock my column, clear the 2 msgs from the DIC, and solve the Fuel cut off?
Thanks for any imput!!

I have a 2001 6 speed. I just called the dealer and found out I have had a recalled done on the car. I have owned the car now for 3 years and when I started it up this weekend from storage, I live in michigan, it showed service column lock. it has never showed this. The steering wheel is not locked. I drove it down the driveway and was able to get it to 5 mph for a couple of seconds without a problem. Should I be worried. If I should be what should I do. If I put the CLB will I have a problem since it is displaying the sevice column lock. Will I have a problem due to the recall being done. And also was reading the sticky below this one and it was talking about the 04006c recall where they take out the locking mechanism, where does that fit into the equation? Any advice will be appreciated. I am currently selling the car and just want it to be no worries for the future owner.
Thanks
Tim
From the pic in the link below, I finally realized what the K harness actually looked like and I unplugged it and plugged the CLB bypass into the intended spot (not the existing wire plug that was going up to the steering wheel) and now everything works perfectly.
Yes I feel like an idiot now for not finding this out sooner, but none of the directions I read were very clear. The simplist solution was the right one, reading all these posts had me digging into lots of other things rather than the simple answer, KISS.....
I hope this helps someone else understand what the k harness looks like and the proper spot to plug in the CLB (or remove the K Harness).
Thanks for everyones help here and on other links.....
