Default Post Recall "Service Column Lock" questions

All,

I have a 98 C5. This past weekend while I was on vacation I was leaving my sisters house to come home when the car shut off while I was driving at about 15-20 Mph. Once the car stopped, I put it back in park and tried to restart when I got the "pull key - wait 10 seconds error." I did as instructed, then tried to drive off when the car shut off again at 2mph. Then the dreaded "service column lock" message popped up. I have never heard of this before, so I opened the owner's manual to see what the hell that meant. After reading the BS in the manual, I decided to go to the internet to find out what could be done to correct the issue. I found this forum and post, and man, thanks for great information on this issue. After reading the posts, I tried all the suggestions..........

1. pulling the fuses 25 and 23
2. removing the neg side of battery
3. clearing all the error codes, then removing the neg side of battery.
4. rubbing it to make it feel better
5. Cussing a lot

None of this worked, so I got it towed on Sunday to Palm Chevrolet in Ocala, FL for a Monday service date. To make a long story short......The Column Lock Motor that no longer locks anything was bad according to the mechanic. I felt that anything with this faulty recalled system should be fixed for free by Chevrolet, so I called them to see if they would pick up the tab. Well, they said no because the motor was not part of the recall in 04 or 06. The tab...$260 for motor, $287 for book maintenance time, total $611 with a $78 tow. Man, that sucked, but I had to get back home for work.

Here's the questions........
Would the column lock bypass (CLB) mentioned on this site and others have corrected this issue and made the car drivable while I was getting the error?

Is it a good idea to install a CLB on the car now to prevent this from happening again in the future? Also, what exactly does the CLB do?

Thanks, Rick

Thanks for the info. I wish I had done more research on the car before this incident, because I would have installed the CLB. I just got the car this year and this is my first Vette. Could I have installed the CLB during the error prior to the dealer replacing the motor? Which CLB do you have installed in your car?

2001 MN6 35k miles--had reprogram done prophylactically just a few mos before the campaign changed, then column locked up at work, went back to my office and found wheel shake post, it worked, got home, locked up again when shut off, called chevy dealer, he said maybe chevy would step up, but he had to see the car to make sure things like "mice damage, etc" was not the cause(please) used wheel shake again a few days later just prior to installing houston corvettes clb, now 3 mos later, absolutely no problem. and of course yesterday the oil sender went bad.

Mine was a little different, my column never locked up but the lock stopped working so the computer thought it was locked and would shut the car off at 2 MPH, put the bypass in, cleared the codes and it worked great.

98 automatic. I had the recall done 2 years ago. I was never satisfied with it because if it was hot outside I would always get the "pull key" error and would have to leave the door open so the DIC would end up with "Door Ajar" and it would run fine. If it was cold outside I generally didn't have any problems. This past Sunday the "Service Column Lock" came on again while I was at the car wash but this time it stayed on. I went home and read all the threads but I had no results. I went back about midnight and spent an hour and a half "crawling the car back to the house", it was only about 8 blocks! I finally had time to pull the K-harness and plugged the stock wires back together and it runs fine!!! Thanks for everyone's ideas and opinions and I'll be sure to buy a CLB for backup!

Default Service Column Lock while driving

Have a 2000 coupe with MN6 and was driving the car Friday and at 55mph all of a sudden the Service Column Lock message appears, column did not lock and fuel did not shut off. I have been driving the car all weekend but I haven’t taken the key out of the ignition as I am afraid that when I do the column will lock. About 3 years ago the column locked up and it had to be towed and the locking module was replaced. I know that the locking ring is still in the car and I like most have the useless piece of paper that expired last year in March of 2008 regarding GM fixing these problems. Anyone have suggestions?

I have CLB on my car. I haven't driven it. I got a "SERVICE COLUMN LOCK" message on my DIC. Probably happen cuz my battery died. I'm really dense and still don't understand even after reading the sticky. My car is a 2002 Z06 H/C

Since I have a CLB,

#1 Can I reset it by pulling the 23 and 25 fuse for 10 minutes with the battery still connected, and everything will be fine.

#2 Do I have to take it to the dealer to get flashed and all that Jazz?
(I'm reluctant to do that cuz my car has a tune and i lost my tune file and my cord is currently being exchange for a hptuners upgrade)

#2B Will my car go faster than 2mph?

Thanks for the help. I don't want to see that CLB message on startup. I want it fixed. HELP

Thanks for all the help. What does pulling the fuse do? The same thing as the battery. I pulled the battery for a little bit and the "Service Column Lock" message still appeared. Maybe i didn't have the battery disconnected for long enough.

Thanks. I'll give it try. I just ordered a battery tender plus. I go without driving my car months at a time. I hear the battery tender plus stops charging when it senses battery is full.

I have read this thread and understand a lot more then I did. However, I haven't found the answer to the exact question I have.

I have a 2001 6spd C5. I bought it a couple months ago from my uncle.
The Column Lock recall was done by a Chevrolet dealer in 2005.
Like many others this fix, "Failed" yesterday..
The Steering Wheel is locked in Place and the fuel is cut off at 1.5 MPH.
I have tried all the quick fix tactics but none worked..
Obviously I should have joined this forum as sooner to find out i needed the CLB.

Now that the 1st fix has "Failed" is it to late for me to install the CLB to correct all my problems?
Will the CLB, unlock my column, clear the 2 msgs from the DIC, and solve the Fuel cut off?

Thanks for any imput!!

Why are people still asking?
Return the wiring to stock.
Take the locking ring out.
Have someone tune out the fuel cut.

Default Recall still open

Needed a key for the 2000 and went to dealer. Checked the service info as I bought it used and the column Lock recall on it was still "open" and they want to schedule it for completion. The number they had on the printout did not have and a,b, or c behind it. Better to let them do it or pick one up and install myself or both?

Default Recall still open

Printed out 04006C to take to dealer. I will leave them written instructions to not reflash to 1.5 mph on the fuel cutoff. After they take off the ring, I will order a CLB. I figured when I gave them the VIN they would tell me which version of the recall had been done and I would go from there. This dealer sponsors Corvette gatherings and keeps a good stock of them on hand. Seems to care about their service, so maybe I can get the ring removed and have the best of both worlds. The service manager mentioned the dreaded trucking in of some Vettes for this problem. He said it was just a matter of time and to schedule so he could get the parts ahead of time. This forum is unbelievable for help. My 4th Vette, but the first one I had with the forum to help. A guy with a bad harmonic balancer on an 99 came into the garage next door to my office a week ago and they sent him over to talk to me about it. I printed out some posts and he thanked me and the guys next door did the same when I took them the print outs. The complicated gets managable on the forum. The thread on the ignition switch repair makes me want to pull mine out just to fix it ahead of a problem. Thanks to everyone on the forum.

Default Help please

I have a question concerning the recall 04006. I am sure within the 20 pages of info here there is an answer, but I was hoping to get some advice on my paticular situation. Thanks in advance for the help.

I have a 2001 6 speed. I just called the dealer and found out I have had a recalled done on the car. I have owned the car now for 3 years and when I started it up this weekend from storage, I live in michigan, it showed service column lock. it has never showed this. The steering wheel is not locked. I drove it down the driveway and was able to get it to 5 mph for a couple of seconds without a problem. Should I be worried. If I should be what should I do. If I put the CLB will I have a problem since it is displaying the sevice column lock. Will I have a problem due to the recall being done. And also was reading the sticky below this one and it was talking about the 04006c recall where they take out the locking mechanism, where does that fit into the equation? Any advice will be appreciated. I am currently selling the car and just want it to be no worries for the future owner.

Thanks
Tim

Default My Column Lock fixed FINALLY

I read over 1,500 posts on this and other forums and tried everything, repeatedly........battery, fuses, CLB, Relays, jumpers, reprogram fuel shut off speed, delete codes........

From the pic in the link below, I finally realized what the K harness actually looked like and I unplugged it and plugged the CLB bypass into the intended spot (not the existing wire plug that was going up to the steering wheel) and now everything works perfectly.

Yes I feel like an idiot now for not finding this out sooner, but none of the directions I read were very clear. The simplist solution was the right one, reading all these posts had me digging into lots of other things rather than the simple answer, KISS.....

I hope this helps someone else understand what the k harness looks like and the proper spot to plug in the CLB (or remove the K Harness).

Thanks for everyones help here and on other links.....

I'm just like Biloxi. I had my problem in November and now it's back again but i don't have the lock. It just turns off when placed in geer. I printed off the first post from 2005. I also replied to my post from November 2008. I will see if I have the same problem as Biloxi. Maybe the Dealership added the "harness" and it needs to be removed. My reply in my Nov post:

Any tips???
