I just bought an HP Tuners tool to remove this damn fuel cutoff. $500 down the drain. I guess I'll resell it on here. If anyone else is having fuel cut problems and doesn't have access to an HP Tuners tool, it would be a good idea to buy mine after I'm done with it and then resell it. Kind of a pay-it-forward of sorts.
My personal story is I fell victim to column lock, took it to the dealer and they unlocked it and put in the Harness K. I gave them specific instructions not to re-flash anything as I had a custom tune. I got it home and installed a CLB. Its been fine until this winter when the battery died. Put it on the charger and started it up. Fuel cutoff when I tried to move, so obviously they did re-flash something.
I'm leaving the CLB in, and changing the fuel cut value using HP Tuners. I've been pondering if I should do anything with the Harness K.
If you have a CLB installed properly then you CANNOT have a K Harness installed. They do NOT coexist. The K Harness, when it is installed, is in series with the actuator. ie Actuator- K Harness- BCM.
When the CLB is installed properly you have CLB-BCM. The K harness AND the actuator get unplugged. The CLB acts like the Actuator when communicating to the BCM except it does not lock or unlock the column. Column is ALWAYS unlocked with the CLB installed.
The reflash of your PCM may have been done in an earlier variation of the GM Fix and your tune could have been done ontop of the reflash that added the 1.5MPH fuel shutoff. I'm guessing you are not the original owner of the car. GM had a Customer Satisfaction Program (CSP) going from 1998 until the NHTSA recall which started in Feb 2004. Your 99FRC may well have had CSP 01044 done to it before the official recall. They were reflashing the PCM even under the CSP.
Good to know. It is absolutely installed correctly, so that wont bother me again. I kind of figured that the Harness K was what I unplugged when I did the CLB but I didn't know for certain.
On another note, my HP Tuners tool got here tonight, I installed it, and it took me 5 minutes to change the fuel cutoff value. Fired up, and took her for the first drive in about 7-8 months. Expensive for being used for such a tiny change, but damn does it feel good.
Hi, I am a corvette technician at a Chevrolet dealership. My comment to you is that the real culprit are grounds G201 and G202, what happens is that the column lock actuator feedback switch fails due to the bad ground. As an engineer you probably can figure out why, also have seen just the column lock fail. The recall will not fix your car it will only remove the lock plate and due to the grounds the relay installed under the recall will only fail later on. The repair to fix, clean both grounds, add a ground wire from G202 through firewall straight to battery negative, and replace column lock actuator. You still need to have the lock plate removed under the recall but, I wouldn't bother installing the relay. I have found this to be a permenant solution to the problem. We used to do the recall, do the recall, then finally did some further inspections after some cars started coming back and found the ground issues. Hope this helps!

I am sorry to have to ask, but I am at the end of my rope. When I read the all the post I just get lost. Here is my story. 1. Purchased car used. 2. Get "Service Column Lock" message. 3. No fixes I try unlock wheel. 4. GM says all recalls have been done. 5.Find no evidence of the "K" harness. So GM is no help. Now I have torn it down to the point where I have removed the Electronic Lock Unit. WHAT IS MY NEXT STEP TO REMEDY THIS? Do I reinstall the lock without the pin? If so how do I go about removing the pin? How do I get rid of the Service message? Any and all help will be appreciated..
Etz, my post should help you. Quick answer. Buy the CLB(bypass). I don't know what state you are in but you will have to buy it from a corvette shop. I live in Dallas, Texas and bought mine from Covettes of Dallas. Cost: $40-$80. This will take care of the message. You have a male to female connection on the wires. It took me some time to figure this out because the dealership finally did my warranty in November '08. And installed the K-harness. GM gave you incorrect information, GM must resolve the defect if it has never been done cuz of NHTSA----got that info from 8vette. Remember to turn key to ON. Pull fuse #25. Leave key ON. Install Bypass. Put in fuse #25. Turn key to OFF and back ON. Error message disappeared for me. I drove off with wires hanging. I will tell my story down below. Weard story.
My story; I had my car at my mechanic for about 2 weeks. He tried installing the Bypass and had no luck. Car kept shutting off after about 2-5 feet. So, I found pictures of the K-harness cuz the dealership fixed my Column lock issue in November '08. Whole story in another post about Nov '08. I bought the Bypass in Nov' 08 but never installed it because of a new battery. Dumb idea. So, my mechanic and i decided to call a tow truck to take it back to the dealership. Mechanic had already put everything back together without the Bypass. When we went into the garage to start it up we had to jump start the car with a battery pack. After it started, my mechanic pulled it out of the garage. Went backwards and frontwards real fast. We were looking at each other like "what did you do?" The car didn't have no Service Column lock errors.
I took it to Sears to get a new battery. They pulled off the battery and installed a new battery. When I attempted to drive it...I got the Service Column lock error. The car shut off after 2 feet. DANG!!!!!!
12.7 volts concept: The Sears mechanic's and I plugged in a wall charger and got the volts up to about 14. The error did not go away. Apparently the car displays a voltage of 12.4 or 12.6 on startup. I read somewhere that it had to be above 12.7. That is why we used the wall charger and the car was reading 13.7 or 14 on startup but the error never went away. Corvettes of Dallas said once you have the error it will never go away 'til you install the Bypass. I asked "..why did it do go away at the shop???" No answer.
Called a tow truck. But since I had all of the instructions from this forum printed out, I started to work on installing the bypass. I found the K-harness. Disconnected it. It took me about 45 minutes total. By 8pm, I had the problem resolved. Cancelled the tow. Drove the car home with the wires hanging. I'm happy. I'm going to my garage now to touch up the wires and put the panels back on and drive around Dallas tonight.
***that was weird. Why did the error message disappear?????? odd??? Anyways, I have the Bypass installed. Hopefully, I never see that problem again.

I have a 2001 Manual transmission car and I recently had the recall done to fix the steering lock. Today I went out and the battery was low and the car wouldn't start. I jump started the car with my charger and ever since the "Service Steering Column Lock" message is showing. My steering isn't locked, but the message is still showing. Will it clear on it's own after a while or is there a way to clear it? Should this be happening? Should I take it back to the dealer?

ok here is the deal. i just picked up a 2001 convertible,6 speed,in atlanta and i am going to bring it to ontario canada. the clb has been installed. now i have to get it saftied in canada but before i do that i need to get a vehicle recall clearance letter from gm. well guess what there is an outstanding field action --04006 electronic column lock system status "open". gm will do the required action but it sounds to me like i am better off with the clb. i can't register the car until i get this cleared. will gm clear this if i tell them the clb has been installed? do i get the work done then re-install the clb. what should i do? this is my first vette..
Not that I want to propagate a 50+ page thread, but I feel compelled to chime in.
I am the proud owner of a 98 MN6 Black Vette, I’ve owned her for 9+ years. This past month I decided to sell it because I bought a 06 Z. I had a Corvettes of Houston CLB on the first month I owned it thanks to this forum. A few years back unannounced to me my wife brought my car in for some light service and decided to get the recall done on the “column thingy” as she puts it. A short time later she told me the recall had been done but I figured it was a double safeguard against the CLB, apparently they removed my CLB and replaced it with the GM version which worked until now. That brings me to now, as I said above I am decided to sell my car and bam “column lock”. I had a friend with a tech 2 remove the fuel cut off so I can drive it to the stealership where they proudly told me there was nothing they could do for the error message. I bought the CLB from COH again, but still could not get the error to go away. I did the fuse thing before/after turning the ignition, unplugged the battery…nothing. I then noticed the existing wiring harness had a white wire and for my year which was a contradiction. According to the forum A4 trannys had the white wire harness, and MN6 (6 speed) had the “K” harness behind the BCM (which I couldn’t find). I then removed the supposed A4 harness under the driver side dash and plugged in the COH CLB, and it worked perfect without removing fuses.
I guess the moral of my story is not every situation is the same you never know what the "idiots"at the stealerships do to our beloved cars so don’t bash other members for trying to find out what is wrong with their rides!
ride on!

My 2003 C5 Vette (I am the first owner) never had this problem until now, but did go in for the recall back in 2004. Since yesterday the "service column lock" message shows up and the steering is actually locked so I cannot even get the car out of my garage. My battery is brand new (replaced it a few weeks ago). The dealer does not want to fix this problem for free because they did the recall already. If I understand the info on this forum correctly, the recall for 2003 C5 only shuts down the fuel but does not actually address the problem. Is it reasonable to be charged for fixing this problem? Do other dealers charge under similar circumstances?
I have a 2001 MN6 with Z06 custom motor and HP tune. Modified oil pressure sensor and had battery disconnected. Now getting pull key wait 10 sec message with fuel cutoff. Car apparently had recall done in 2005 according to dealer. What is best way to approach from safety aspect as well as eliminate potential for this to happen again? Should I remove relay or just pull fuse or install CLB as well?
I want to thank John for his column lock tutorial.
First I pulled the dash pad off. It was clear from the color of the four wires at the column lock actuator connector going to the the BCM that the MN6 relay mod was installed in the recall. However pulling the access panel in the foot-well the relay was no where to be found.I followed the purple wired on the BCM connector back to the relay which had fallen behind the bcm.The purple wire spliced into the BCm connector was rubbing against the BCM case corner working towards a short.
I turned the ignition to on to retract the actuator plunger and pulled fuse 25.I then installed the CLB.I jumpered pin 30 to 87A in the relay socket.Fuse back in, cycled the ignition and no codes. Seems to work great!
I bought the adaptive performance CLB off ebay for 39. I ordered it on Thursday eve and it was here on Friday. It has a very small footprint. I had wanted to build my own using hi rel components but sourcing the connector was an issue so we will see if it holds up.
It is rumored that the clb had caused damage to some BCM's. I can't imagine how that is possible.
I wonder if anyone has used a storage scope to measure the glitch energy on the BCM lines with the actuator and then the CLB and compared the difference.
Or characterize the actuator & the Clb and run them on a simulator under the transient condition:? Just a thought.
First of all want to say thanks to John for his help and information. After doing some further reading I was hoping I could get some explanation on a couple of things. I have a 2001 MN6 and from what I read I understand this car should not have had the k harness installed as part of the recall yet this car does in fact have it. Any thoughts? I checked all fuses and grounds, removed k-harness and have CLB on order for this week. Should I be looking for this second relay installed by BCM as I do not see one? What does the relay look like and where exactly should it be located. Does this need to be removed when installing the CLB kit? Want to make sure as much as possible I take care of this problem once and for all. Thanks for the great information!
Unless you are the original owner of the car it is all but impossible to know what has been done to the car by a combination of GM and/or the previous owners. Not surprising to hear that your car had a K Harness installed. What will be surprising is if you had both a K Harness AND the second relay near the BCM. Here is the info I have seen about that second relay and how to bypass it if it is there:
If you have that relay it will need to be bypassed as it apparently can cause spurious signals back to the BCM that get it into a confused state about whether the column is locked or unlocked. (keep in mind that once you install a CLB the column is never again locked. BUT the BCM doesn't know that. It relys on completed signals that it gets back from its unlock/lock signals.) The CLB simply turns around the unlock/lock signals to the BCM as completed signals thereby keeping it happy.
Once again thanks! Do you know what this relay looks like? Why would they install k harness without second relay? Just curious as to whey you would be suprised if a second relay were in place?
This weekend I was attempting to retrieve the error codes (only turning the key to Acc) and I didn't hear the lock motor run.
Well it flashed "Pull key" and then the "Serv Column Lock". After I managed to free it up, I than proceed to retrieve the codes. To my surprise, the only one
there as related to the seat vertical position. I was expecting many other codes?? What triggers the "pull key and wait 10 secs" error?
Can I just pull the fuse (#23?) that runs the lock motor, after it unlocks as a temp fix until I get the CLB installed? With CLB installed will I still the "pull key"
and fuel shut down?
First off, I haven't read ALL 51 pages of this post. I've read the first 13 pages and the last 2.
Here's my situation, I AM the original owner, in fact I ordered this car, picked it up when it arrived at the dealership. Has never been taken in for service, EVER. It's a 2002, MN6, very late build #33893. 2 days ago the DIC displayed Service Column Lock, steering wheel has never locked up and drives fine, I just use the reset button everytime I start it to close out all the DIC display codes. I also have Service Active Handling, Service Traction Control, Service ABS as well. This car has 28,768 miles on it currently. My question is Does it hurt anything if I continue to drive it this way. I'd rather not deal with any modifiying of parts, the car is completely factory stock. Thanks.

Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
Slideshow: A Jaguar designer's personal project imagines what a modern front-engined Corvette might look like if Chevrolet revisited the golden age of the Stingray.
