Default Piaa light set up HELP

I am a complete duffus when it comes to wires & electric.. I have a bad relay on my 1100 lightsetup & have received a new replacment relay. My old relay was a PL5FA that has 1 plug connector with 3 prongs in one end and a 4 prong plug going out the other end towards the headlight area. The new relay is a PL5FB. It has a 4 prong receptacle and thats it. How the hell do I use this one with my present set up.

Hey dogboy, I don't mean to hijack your thread, but how hard is it to replace the stock driving light and where should I get a replacement besides the dealership. Thanks

Okay I have the white thick power line to 1 prong. a thin white line with a red dot every once inawhile which is the power from the fog light switch to another prong & 2 black ground wires to the 3rd prong ( 1 thick black to frame ground & 1 thin black to somewhere else.) I get power to the 2 power wires when switches are activated but nothing from other end of relay. the other end of relay plug in is the 4 wires from the 2 piaa light harness. How do these wire in to 1 4 prong plug to the new relay # PL5FB?

I tried to understand that, but it just isn't sinking in at the moment

The new relay should have a diagram etched on it similar to this one.

You need to connect one of the coil pins to a ground (86 on my pic), and the other coil pin (85 on my pic) to the + 12VDC that is energized by the stock fog light wire (purple?). When the stock fogs are turned on the electromagnet in the relay 'pulls in' the switch and allows current to flow through the other two pins.

You need to connect one of the "switch" pins on the relay (87, 30 on my pic) to your +12V battery terminal (preferable fused), and the other switch pin to the PIAA's +12V feed wire. The other wire from the PIAA's will go to a ground point on the car.

Any questions?

I know its confusing.
The new relay dosn't have any diagram on it. It has 4 blades to the plug in, 2 are a copper color & the other 2 are silver color. .
I wish I could publish a picture to the link so you can see. Basically I need to know where to plug these wires in to the new relay. Presently I have the thick white wire to the pwr supply at fuse box, the thin white to pwr supply from fog lamp switch, and 2 black grounds. the other end of relay has the 4 wires from the 2 piaa lamps.

I can't get to the pics you posted, but that shouldn't matter.

FYI: A relay is just an electronically controlled on/off switch. On a SPST relay (with only four pins it has to be SPST), two of the pins are the 'switch', and two of the pins are the 'coil'. The switch pins act just like any normal toggle switch, off=contacts open, on=contacts closed. The coil pins power an electromagnet that physically closes the contacts of the switch when it is energized. The coil side and the switch side do not have any electrical 'wires' in common inside the relay, they are two separate circuits.

On your new relay, most likely the spades that are the same colors are paired up to be the coil for one color, and the switch for the other color. If you don't know which color is which function you can do a little experiment to figure it out. Connect any one pin on the relay to a ground wire, then connect +12V to the other pin of the same color. If you hear a 'click' coming from inside the relay then that is the coil side. If you don't hear a click then try the same thing with the other color pins. You can't hurt anything (the relay or the car) as long as you only connect two wires to two pins at any one time, but please be careful not to shock yourself.

For the coil side of the new relay (the two pins that click when powered), to one pin connect the thin white wire you currently have that is powered from the fog light switch. Connect the other coil pin to a ground on the car.

For the switch side of the new relay (the other two pins left over after finding the two that click), on one pin connect the thick white wire coming from your fuse box +12V. The other pin will have to be connected to two wires, one coming from each of the piaa lamps.

For the other two wires coming from the piaa lamps, just connect them to a good ground point on the car.

If you do all of this, you should end up with the thin white wire energizing the coil, then the lights should come on when the relay switch is turned on by powering them from the thick white wire.

If you have any more questions ask away
