I have had my 03 in the shop several times to have a flutter noise fixed. It almost sounds like an exhaust leake but I'm far from an expert. It's typically in the 3000 - 5000 rpm range but it's there most times when you open the throttle. The dealer thinks that it's the shifter and has replaced it once already but the noise keeps returning. Has anyone else run into this problem? Any hints or ideas would be a great help? Thanks!
My 98 had a shifter noise when it was new. It sounded like transmission gear noise and also rattled. There was an updated shifter that was designed to fix the problem.
I replaced the shifter on my 02 Z06 with a Kirban shifter and guess what? The noise is back!! It is something that I have to live with. Is not bad, but just a little annoying.
With a STOCK shifter, you should not have any noise. There is a rubber isolator on the handle that prevents any noise from transmitting to the interior.
Here is a picture of the two types of shifters.
Here is what the bottom of the stock shifter and the shifter housing looks like.
I would ask them if they are replacing the plastic bushing on the bottom of the shifter. Could also be something wrong with the isolator bushings on the shifter housing.
Thanks Bill! I talked with the service department again and they said GM has reported 13 Vettes witht his problem from '03. They are ordering a new shifter that should be here in a week or so. Hopefully round two of the shifters will be the magic fix. Thanks again for the insight and I'll take it along with me when she goes back in the shop and be sure to keep you posted.
