Default Taking the Cats off

Tried in general with 0 response, hoping someone can feed my hungry brain with info. Will taking off cats be a reasonable gain to compliment corsa's with cutouts? I took off the cats in my old 84 camaro and it did wonders, I realize the cats back then must have been a little less refined.

I have mine off and gained about 10rwhp. I will be putting mine back on.
Reason I'm putting them back on. My car is driven daily and in traffic. The smell is just getting kind of unbearable. So I'm putting them back on.

Why are you putting them back on....is it just me, or did you forget to finish your post?

Also considering taking my cats off. What kinda pipes do you need to put in there place and where can you get them?

I gained about 10-12rwhp. Car stinks when its in the garage. With long tubes, no cats, x-pipe, and slp loudmouth car is insanely loud for the past 1-1/2 year. Gotta put a different catback on now

Any performance muffler shop will be able to fabricate a pipe in place of cats. When I did my camaro as a kid, I even got them to get an old cat as a shell, and ran a straight pipe right through the old gutted cat. That way a cop can even tap on it and it doesn't sound hollow.

I know a guy that did a before & after dyno with & without the Random Technology Metal Matrix High Flow Cats. He only gained 4RWHP w/o the Cats on his Pro LG LT Header system.

I'm having the RT MM HF Cats added to the Pro LG LT Header system on my 2001 C5 Coupe this Tuesday at LG Motorsports. I will post the dyno graph results, however LGM will also be installing the FAST 90 mm Intake & G2 NW 90 mm TB on my C5.

The smell is unbelievable.
I'm near 50 yo and this is nothing like running sbc or BB in the late '60s or early '70s. This stuff STINKS!! It's worse than a 60's 2 cycle lawnmower.
We didn't have Unleaded back then.
It's not worth the 4 hp you'll gain....unless you are a recluse.

Thanks, that's what I needed to hear. I never would have thought it would stink like that, usually a smelly car means bad cats(sulfur), not no cats.

Well, I'm 6 years shy of 50, but the no Cats smell has never really bothered me. The main reason I'm having the Cats installed is due to State Inspections with tighter emissions testing.

Using a cat eliminator-x-pipe crossover combo that went from the cast manifolds to the cuts behind the cats, my '01 Z06 picked up 14 horse and about the same TQ. Sounded great with the factory Ti system too. The pipe was from Breathless performance in Fla for $279 if I remember. A good price for that amt. of gain. Smell-not bad at all, but to each their own with that I guess (PS I'll sell this pipe, have LG longtubes now...)

Believe me - they do stink = stench.
I'm surprised that a bunch of guys haven't chimed in. When I was first told this I thought they were exaggerating. Nope, they weren't exaggerating, mine are off and they're going back on.

My 01 has no cats or pre cats and I have no smell at all. I have collector car plates, so no E check to hassle with.

Have 380 RWHo 415 RWTQ A4 with a 4000 stall, Kooks LT headers with Off Road X-Pipe, ie no cats!

had Corsa Indies, too loud, even though I liked it a little, after a while just way too loud.

Got Z06 Ti's much better. The car is tuned perfect! Stinks Like Crap when your in the garage and at a stop. Cloths smell liek it and I am too thinking of putting the Kooks High flow cats, the section that is just like mine But with the cats. It is bugging me.

I ran an 11.42 at 122.58 MPH so I don't think I will loose too much, hopefully!

I like the no cats, but it is starting to get to me

Oh Ya had em off 2 years now

A clean burning Stock motor with NO Cats isn't going to give much smell compared to a Modded (H&C) one , The smell does get to me sometimes and I'm sure it bothers some people , When I mix Race Gas I love it .

It is strange - Mine do not smell. Only on a rare oocaision do I even get a hint of that smell. BUT.. with FLP Long tubes and GHL Magnum 4" CAT Back it is damn loud. I have thought about putting the high flow CATs on that came with the headers just to reduce the noise

Yes.

I always forget to mention that I have a bit more overlap than most - therefore mine is the extreme. But it does stink!

Horsepower gain if any is negligible, youll never get past emissions test,
it will probably smell and worst of all it makes it harder for the rest of us to breathe.

I am running TPIS headers, Corsa crossover pipe with no cats on a '01 vert and it stinks to the point I too may be adding the cats back. This is with a head / cam package.
