My personal opinion is the 160 is too cool, unless you are in the southwest or something. I kept the stock stat and reprogrammed the fans with a Vinci fan controller with both fans on at 208 and off at 201. Oil temps max out at about 215 on a hot day. As for the bypass, don't think it is worth anything on a C5 especially if you see how little a pocket for coolant there is in the throttle body.

Too low... your oil likes to live around 200 degrees or more. A 172 is about as low as you want to go.

Default Tomball

This dude lives in Tomball, TX it gets hot down here. I live in Houston and run a 160 thermo with my fans controlled using LS1 edit. 193 on; 183 off. No by pass. Do whatever you need to do to keep your car running between 180 and 190. It will run better and will love you for it. Your oil temps will run from 199 to 215 if you beat on it.

I agree, the thermo has little to do with lowering temps. It only opens at that temp so water can circulate to the radiator. It's the fans that make the big difference. When air passes over that hot fluid it re-cools it for its return trip to the engine. Control your fans and you will control temps.

I run 199 to 207F on the hottest of days. 215F happens when I beat on it. I never beat on my engine when it warming up or below 190F.

It won't run 160 in Texas. 175 to 180 on the highway. Oil will be around 210. My fans don't come on while on the highway due to the 160 thermostat. It will depend on the condition of the cooling system.

Coolant bypass is a waste of money.

Bob

Got my coolant by-pass parts and hood seal at Home Depot for $3.98. Got to be good for at least 10 HP.
