I just bought my very first c5 yesterday and it is already having problems (just my luck). When I was driving it home, the coolant temp guage went up and down between 220 all the way to 260 while on the freeway. In addition, the oil temp went from 210 all the way to 260 when I pulled over and shut it off. The car is 01 stock with a dual intake and some cheapo "chip" called a super programer which looks like it hooks up to the throttle body sensor. I definitely plan to remove the chip, but any opinions/info/insight on the overheating and chip would be great.
Cruising temps should be below 200. You should see around 225 when in gridlock. Check the simple stuff first. Look under the front bumper, to the front of the radiator. Could be a load of debris blocking the front, and strangling the cooling system from air - this would easily cause the problems you describe. Also check the coolant level in the tank. Let us know what you find.
You should have gotten the COOLANT OVER TEMP signal on the DIC (Driver Information Center) at 256.
I think he meant that after he shut it off, the coolant temperature kept rising. That part is normal, as mine does it too....but I haven't watched how high it goes.
Ben, congrats on your new C5. They are great cars, and very reliable, but as a fanatic there are a few things that I've learned over the years. You can find most of those things in the C5 General Sticky. It'll tell you what can potentially go wrong, what may have already happened, and give you some ideas on how to make your car track worthy.
