Default Another startup-lifter-tick problem solved!

Ever since I heard about how using a "low pressure drop" oil filter can quiet that cold startup tapping, I have used a K&N oil filter with great success. Every chance I get, I suggest using this filter to those who have the same problem and in almost all cases, I never find out if it worked for them.
However, back about one month ago, I stopped to chat with a neighbor who has a 76 C3 (with ZZ4 crate engine and NOS). He was very frustrated about an engine tapping sound that should've been fixed when he changed lifters.....no such luck and it got to the point where he didn't want to drive his Corvette anymore. Of course, I recommended that he try the K&N oil filter that was available by speacial order from the local Kragen Auto Parts.
I didn't think much about it until tonight when he pulled up to my driveway to thank me for suggesting this $12 "fix". His engine is now back to the sound it had before (no tapping) and he once again loves driving his car again. He is one very happy camper! So, to those who don't believe what higher flow can do, give it a try. You too, will hear a difference in your C5 if it is now tapping when cold.

I found the same thing when I got rid of my UPF44 and installed a Baldwin filter. Both the Mobil-1 and the UPF44 caused me problems.

I find it hard to believe that the oil filter will stop the ticking noise and GM just hasnt switched oil filters.

Im due for an oil change. What K & N oil filter do I use on the 2000 LS1.

Proof is in the ticking

What does "low pressure drop" mean exactly, please?

Thanks.

Difference in oil pressure before and after the filter. Or think of it as resistance to flow through the filter.

The part # is HP1007 and yes, the proof is in the ticking (specifically, the lack of ticking). The other contributor to this type of ticking is the oil viscosity. Anyone running a 20W-50 oil is asking for poor flow at startup temps. Tests have shown that the K&N and Baldwin filter well, so you are not flooding your engine with contaminants by switching filters. The other nice thing about the K&N is the welded nut on top - it makes removal a breeze. cheers:

P.S. Look here for features of the K&N filter: http://www.knfilters.com/oilfilter.htm

I think I'll give it a try. I was just getting used to the ticking sound.

Yeah..... Saw this thread and put the K+N oil filter on and no workie. Same darn noise that I started with and started getting all worried about the noise from the lifters only to do a search here and find multiple threads pointing out that some lifter tick (like my motor has) is normal especially on hot starts. So that was a fun ride.
