Default HELP!!! Oil Pressure high (50-60 psi)

First off, let me say I have had the oil pressure sensor replaced about about 6 months ago and it seems to work fine. Once the engine is warm, the oil pressure is usually between 35 and 40 psi. Tonight, the pressure was reading between 50 and 60 psi. It is not pegged at 80 psi like when the sensor goes bad. Is it a faulty reading, or do I have a problem? The car runs fine and sounds fine. What would cause high oil pressure if the reading is correct? Any help?

Are you sure the oil was up to temperature? Mine will show that high when the oil is still warming up.

I drove the car to work today which is 30 miles one way. The guage read 55 psi when cold and still 50-60 after getting to work. Although when the car is at idle, it goes down to 50 psi. So, the guage does respond to engine RPM.

Have you changed oil recently? I'm having the same type of problem. Noticed this after changing oil. My pressure at idle is around 40 lbs and increases to 55 to 60 lbs at higher rpms.

Nope, haven't changed the oil recently or had any work done on the car. That is why I am so puzzled ! But, maybe the oil pressure sensor is getting ready to go bad again...

60psi is not that high, and certainly nothing to worry about. What do you think it's going to do? Blow up your engine? Stop needlessly worring about it. That is NOT too high.

That is actually what I wanted to know, what is considered too high! Thanks for the input.

Mine runs at 50-60 psi all the time. I've had a lot of engine work done and have a ported oil pump so I am sure that has a lot to do with it.

I dont think you have anything to worry about with the psi that you mentioned.

That is how mine is normally, but now it is 50-60 all the time.

You may want to talk to somebody about it to be sure there is no problem. If it always ran that high, no issues. However, yours appears to have undergone a change from what it has historically run at. Under those circumstances, I, too, would have a concern, and I would get it checked to find out what is going on before something consequential could happen, in case something is plugged or failing. It's not the current pressure, but the change in that pressure, that would bother me.

Its normal, dont worry about it. I would be worried if the pressure started to drop though.

If your readings are different at cold or operating temperature all of the sudden then something has changed. I am a mechanic and I can tell you - don't brush something like that off. Your oil filter may be disintegrating for all we know, causing blockage and distributing itself around.... (just a thought) How long do you go between oil changes? I might recommend changing the oil regardless of how long it's been in there. On the more electrical side of things, if you change your oil and filter and find that the readings are still not what they used to be then you might want to re check the oil pressure sensor, take it out of there and see if it's blocked somehow, or what the condition of the terminal pins are. Check it out!!! Remember: I said if the readings that you have now at cold, or operating temperatures, or both at the rpm ranges that you usually drive at are different than they used to be all of the sudden then there is cause for concern. 50-60 psi is normal if you're driving the car hard so you know.

I only put around 5k a year on the car, and the last oil change was about 6-8 months ago. So, you could be right on. I am going to get the oil changed in the morning and see if the oil pressure returns to normal! Thanks for the advise!

Very good! As I mentioned earlier in my post, it was the "change" that would have really bothered me, not the peak pressure. Good thing you investigated.
