Default Manual Trans Fluid

Can someone tell me where and how to check my manual trans fluid and what kind of fluid to add if needed. It's a 2000 coupe

Thanks

Look at the last picture on this page. That is your fill plug. You want the fluid to be at the bottom of that hole. Basically pour the fluid in and when it starts leaking out of this hole, put the plug back in. Drain from the bottom and fill from this one. You will need almost 4 quarts of fluid. I use Redline ATF D4.

The owners manual should tell you what fluid to use, if you wanted OEM.

FYI, both manual and automatic transmissions take the same Dexron III automatic transmission fluid, yes, ATF. Get a synthetic fluid, many brands available at local auto parts store, I use Mobile 1 Synthetic ATF. A bit more expensive, but what isn't these days, and shifting seems smoother.

Your owner's manual has a diagram which locates the fill plug, it is on the driver's side. The drain plug is on the passenger side, near the bottom of the transmission case. Takes 4 quarts after draining the old stuff out. Do this with the vehicle raised in a level position. Of course, wait for the fluid and exhaust temps to cool before getting near the drain plug. You know it is full when the fluid level is just below the fill hole, use finger method to check Torque the plug to 20 ft-lbs.

Mobile 1 Synthetic worked VERY well for me in my 98 and 02 Z06! Much better shift feel and should last longer than the NON Synthetic ATF.

My 2000 Owner's Manual says that "manual transmission fluid doesn't require changing". WTFO? I have a hard time believing that. Any comments?

Default Just changed mine with only 500 miles on it (new 2004) and it looked bad!

My car has been basically sitting for a year or more from build date. Changed to Amsoil synthetic ATF and was surprised how bad the original non-synthetic fulid looked! Also changed the rear diff, but it looked OK! I replaced both drain plugs with magnetic ones also. Changed the original oil for the same reason at 350 miles. Shifting shows some improvement as others have mentioned. Now the trans is "lifetime" (but I'll be changing it on a 30K mile interval anyway).

You will be happy with the switch!! I saw a big difference when I changed out my 98 and my 02 Z06!
