Default Hypertech Programmer

Newbie here and this is my first post. I have a '00 Vette and two of my mods are the 3.42 differential assembly and 172 thermostat. I have the hypertech programmer for the '00 vette but in it's options it doesn't list either of these. It has the 2.73 and 3.15 as choices for the differential and 160 and 180 I believe for the thermostat. What do yall think I should do about that when using the programmer? Should I leave the differential stock and put the 160 thermostat or does it even matter?

MODS: B & B Tri-Flow Exhaust and Headers, RM Twin-Flo Air Intake System, z06 Air Flow Duct and SS Coupler, Throttle Body Bypass Kit, 172 Thermostat, MAT Sensor, Cold Air Screens, GM 1030 CFM Throttle Body, Max Flow Mass Air Sensor, Hypertech Programmer, Pro Torque Convertor, 3.42 Differential Assembly, z06 Intake Manifold, Hotchkis Swaybar, Bilstein Shocks, z06 Calipers, Hawk Brake Pads, Bosch Spark Plugs, Magnecor Wires, Random Technologies X-Pipe and Catalytic Convertors

stromadd I am not sure you should use the hypertech for this reason. You probably had your PCM tuned for your 342 rearend. I know a hypertech will not tune an A4 for anything but the 273 and 315. I am not sure about this but I would be afraid the hypertech tune may erase the parameters that were put into your PCM for your 342 rearend. The thermostat setting only sets your cooling fans lower. Maybe someone else can help you further.

My 98 programmer has 3.42 as a choice, set the programmer for 160 , actually turns one on at 170 the second at 190..You can adjust by changing wheel height but it will throw off the speedometer a like amount.Reduce height by 8% will increase speedometer by 8%. Ive never tried changing wheel height so I dont know the limits of the parameters.

the Hypertech fails at gear scaling beyond the factory available A4 ratios. Oh yes... it has the "selection" of the 3.42; but it only works on F-Bodies.

The HPIII fails to alter the TCC Slip Table and the P1870 error code will eventually be set.

Don't believe me??? Call and ask the Hypertech people yourself. Make certain you ask for their C5 Corvette specialist.

That's good to know. It seems like I've heard somewhere that corvette will correct themselves on the speed limit thing...don't know how true that is. I hate that my programmer won't help me with the 3.42, so what do yall think is my best option with that differential assembly? I hear everyone talking about dyno tuning and all that but I'm new to that aspect. I just want to make sure my car is getting all the power possible with the mods I have. I beginning to think my hypertech programmer might not be the way to go.

MODS: B & B Tri-Flow Exhaust and Headers, RM Twin-Flo Air Intake System, z06 Air Flow Duct and SS Coupler, Throttle Body Bypass Kit, 172 Thermostat, MAT Sensor, Cold Air Screens, GM 1030 CFM Throttle Body, Max Flow Mass Air Sensor, Hypertech Programmer, Pro Torque Convertor, 3.42 Differential Assembly, z06 Intake Manifold, Hotchkis Swaybar, Bilstein Shocks, z06 Calipers, Hawk Brake Pads, Bosch Spark Plugs, Magnecor Wires, Random Technologies X-Pipe and Catalytic Convertors

Are you sure your PCM has not already been adjusted for your 342 rear end? How long have you been driving it. It should throw a fault code if it has not been tuned for the 342.

there is no speedo error on the C5 when changing rear axle ratios. And that covers all C5's... auto, stick, Z06. So there's nothing to be "self corrected" - or "non-self corrected"

MPH is detected on the output spline shaft of the rear diff. The only thing that affects the speedo on a C5 is a change in overall rear tire heigth.

Sounds like you know your stuff Mike...that's what I thought I heard about the speedometer though and that makes me feel better. I've had the 3.42 for about a year and a half now but in the last few months I've tried playing around with the hypertech programmer and just wasn't sure how that affected it. I don't think I have any error codes but as with another post of mine, the abs and traction control warning lights have come on. Do you think it's related?

You are right Mike Mercury does know his stuff. So Mike if he has been driving around for a year and a half don't you think someone has tuned the PCM for gear scaling for the 342. I would think he would have thrown a fault code by now. I don't think setting off the abs and TC warning would have anything to do with a different rearend. So were you braking and or spinning your tires when you recieved these messages on the DIC?

depends. I drove one entire year without any reprog when I went from the 3.15 to the 3.42. Only after then did I start gettign the P1870 error code - and it was after 2 hours of constant highway driving at 70mph. The (falsely) detected error worsens when the MPH increases.

I still believe my situation was unique. And now maybe someone else has "jonined the unique club".

So many things have to happen to get the slip code error. First off, the slip is only tested for in "4" - and only starting at a certain speed, and it has to happen for "xx" duration.

Since my 2002 had the 3.15 from the factory, the 8.6 percent change of the 3.42 upgrade may have been a borderline error condition that needed a certain type of driving to set the code (which finally hapopened one day. Remember, my C5 is not a daily driver).

And there is always the other possibility that the car had been reprog'd when the 3.42 was installed.

stromadd ;
did you buy the car that way, or did you do the 3.42 mod after you owned the C5 ?

And if so, did you do the swap yourself, or did you pay someone to do it for you? And lastly; did they do a reprog with the 3.42 upgrade ?

.

Well I do like to consider myself special :-) This vette already had the 3.42 installed when I took over. I honestly don't know if the person who installed it also reprogrammed. I wasn't spinning the tires or braking when the abs and traction control lights came on..it was under normal driving. I don't know if there's any connection the the 3.42 but it just crossed my mind as we were talking about it.
