I'm thinking of having the output shaft changed to a hardened shaft. Has anyone had problems with leaving the stock in. I take the car to the track three or four times a year, thanks for any info.
I had to put in a new transmission when I shattered mine. GM gave me a new one when they could not get the rest of the shaft out of the transmission. He could not tell me why it went bad. To replace the trans was around 5500. I did tell me he has never had to replace one I was the first. I don't know if my shift kit was to much on it or not. It would not hurt to have one put in. Good luck
I have read many posts of them breaking and taking out whole transmissions, and rear ends. After doing mine I regret not doing them both, but it really depends on you rHP level, and tires.
I had mine done when I went to the 4.10 gears. I figured while everything was open it just made sense to change it out. I also go to the track about 10 times per year so I rather be safe than sorry...
Lots of vendors have them here too. LG, A n A, T Byrne... IMO better to be safe then sorry. Give Matt a call @ LG and he will get you what you need
Enjoy!

It only takes one launch to break it...
Pay a little now or alot later.
If you're going to the track a couple times a year, and using a sticky tire, you really need to upgrade this. We have also recently started offering the shorter right side shaft and right side gear as well.

Are you tracking the car on a road course or drag strip? If your only road coursing then not much need to worry about the shaft. Next are you talking about a heavy duty transmission output shaft, or the rear differential output shaft? I'm guessing you talking about the HD diff output shaft since they are normally the weakest link in the driveline. The stock ones are common to break. Breaking them normally don't tear up too much other stuff, it just leaves you sitting. Now on other hand the other real common thing to break is the differential off the rear of the transmission. When this happens you tear up a LOT of stuff! If you run the car on the strip at all, you should install a diff brace. This is an extra brace added to the diff and trans to hold the two together. Very cheap compared to a new diff and trans! DTE (find them on the left of this forum) and RPM is two types. I like and have installed the DTE brace. If you are installing a HD diff shaft that is the time to install a brace also. Probably less than 30 minutes extra work when your already in the rearend installing the shaft.
